The Nonprofit Connection

Email Header for handsOn Constant Contact

Dear Friend,

This week marks a special milestone for me, I’m celebrating my 5th anniversary with HandsOn NWNC! It’s hard to believe that just six years ago, I began my journey with this incredible organization as an AmeriCorps VISTA, and a year later, I officially joined the team as the Development and Marketing Coordinator. Today, I’m proud to serve as our Corporate Engagement and Development Manager, and I can honestly say that these five years have been some of the most rewarding of my professional life.

What I love most about my work is connecting with corporations to leverage their resources in meaningful ways to give back to the community. Helping companies mobilize their employees as volunteers is especially close to my heart and in a time when so many people are experiencing loneliness and disconnection, volunteering offers an incredible opportunity to improve mental well-being and build real connections. Since we spend so much of our lives in the workplace, creating a sense of belonging matters, and providing employee volunteer opportunities is a powerful way to do that.

Over the past five years, I’ve learned so much about the Forsyth County community and the people and organizations that make it thrive. Now, as HandsOn expands volunteer services into Guilford County, I’m thrilled to continue growing our impact and helping more companies and volunteers experience the joy and purpose that come from serving others.

A big thank you to my HandsOn family, Amy and Kathy, who have served as great mentors and friends over the past few years. The HandsOn Board, especially my Business and Revenue Committee members, who enthusiastically meet with me every month to provide help and guidance as we’ve leaned more into and have expanded our corporate activation programming. And lastly, thank you to all of you, our partners, volunteers, and supporters, who have made this work so meaningful. Here’s to the next chapter of creating connections and strengthening our communities, together.

Yours in Service,

Casey

Casey Capstick

Corporate Engagement and Development Manager

2025-2026 Nonprofit Essential Series Premier!

Governance

DATE: Thursday, September 18, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Location: Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness, 114 W. 30th St., Room 209 (see map)

We're excited to kick off our 16th season of Nonprofit Essentials series in 2025-2026 with our Governance class, which provides a practical look at nonprofit governance, including organizational life cycles, legal framework and compliance issues, the role of the board in general oversight and duties, and building an effective board. The class is taught by Barbara Lentz, an innovative advisor, teacher, and attorney who has been active in the nonprofit and philanthropy sector her entire career.  Barbara brings real-life experiences and scenarios to her work, advising nonprofits to think creatively and work collaboratively to solve problems. Barbara serves on various nonprofit and social enterprise boards, including the National Advisory Council of the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and co-founded Forsyth Backpack Program, which partners with public schools and local nonprofits to provide supplemental food to food-insecure children in the community.  She is a graduate of Duke University and the University of Michigan Law School.

Nonprofit Essentials is a series of ten courses that, for sixteen years, has strengthened the knowledge and skills of nonprofit board members, staff, and volunteers or those pursuing careers in the nonprofit sector. Offered in partnership since its inception with Wake Forest University’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement, Nonprofit Essentials classes cover a range of topics essential to the governance, management, and operation of nonprofits and are good for those new to the sector, occupying a new position within a nonprofit, or wanting to refine/refresh their skills. Classes are taught primarily by current or former Wake Forest faculty, administrators, and/or alums. Participants who complete all classes will receive a Certificate of Completion from Wake Forest University, Office of Civic and Community Engagement, and HandsOn NWNC.

Classes are held for a half-day once a month from September to June of the following year and meets in-person at the Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness. You can sign up for the entire series or register for just individual classes. Below are the topics that are included in the series, and their tentative dates. Registration for all classes is now open on our website, and a separate email will be sent in September. Got questions? Please contact Kathy Davis for possible options.
