9/30/20
Omaha Public Schools Community,

We are prepared and eager to welcome students back in person. Our phased approach for a responsible return in our Family 3/2 Instructional Model began earlier this month and will continue through October. Our Remote Learning Program remained an option for families who feel it is best for their student during this time. Families received confirmation of their attendance groups by email earlier this week. Our district hotline to assist with questions will be open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 2. That number is 531-299-0302.

If your student will be returning in person, please be sure to have their district-provided face covering washed and with your student as they return to campus. They are an important part of our layered approach to health and safety for the protection of our students, staff and families.

We encourage families to self-check for symptoms of COVID-19 each morning before leaving for school. If anyone in your home is sick, your student must stay home. Face coverings, social distancing, frequent handwashing or use of hand sanitizer and our enhanced cleaning and disinfecting procedures support a safe and healthy space to learn for students and staff.

When COVID-19 is diagnosed in a student or staff member, our contact tracing team immediately investigates. That student or staff member will remain home to rest and recover based on Douglas County Health Department guidance. If anyone else within the school is identified as a close contact and needs to either quarantine or monitor for symptoms, district staff will contact them directly. School communities will also receive an update, because we value open communication with our staff and families. If, based on contact tracing, additional precautions are necessary, a classroom or school community may temporarily transition to remote learning to allow for even greater social distancing and additional targeted disinfecting treatments.

We care deeply about our students and staff. We have prepared for months to responsibly return to in-person leaning. To watch short videos on our layered safety measures, click here. Whether we will work with your student in person or through our 1 to 1 technology initiative in the time to come, we are grateful for your partnership and support.
Update to the OPS Meals2Go Program
Thanks to a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Omaha Public Schools is offering Meals2Go at no cost to students and community children, ages 1 - 18. Each bag contains school favorites, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Milk is available as an option.

  • All students will receive a breakfast and lunch, at no charge until USDA CARES Act funds are gone.

  • Children ages 1-18, will have the opportunity to receive Meals2Go bags at all schools where we are currently distributing meals curbside. Students who are learning remotely as well as community children may receive meals. Additionally, students who will return to the classroom will receive breakfast and lunch at no charge.

  • Parents/guardians who pick up the meals without children in the car will need to provide identification (report card, schedule, birth certificate, etc.) that the meals are for a child at home.

  • Meals2Go bags will continue to be distributed on Mondays (Monday and Tuesday) and Wednesdays (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) at all of the schools where meals are currently distributed. Beginning Oct. 5, the meal distribution time will change to accommodate for staffing:
  • Elementary: 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
  • Middle and High Schools: 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
  • Program schools, early childhood locations and TAC programs will not distribute the Meals2Go bags. The parent/guardian may pick up the meals at any of the other sites currently open.

Omaha Public Schools is able to offer the meals at no cost to all children, ages 18 and under, through a short-term waiver issued from the USDA. After the waiver is over, our district will keep the community informed of all changes as they take effect.

Daily Health Assessment

Every day before they leave home, families must complete a self-health assessment, asking themselves three vital questions:

  1. Have you or anyone in your household had a fever (100.4 or greater), cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, muscle pain, sore throat, head aches, chills, nausea vomiting, diarrhea or new loss of smell/taste in the last three days?
  2. Is anyone in your household waiting for a COVID-19 test result due to symptoms?
  3. Have you or anyone in your household been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last 14 days?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you will be expected to stay home.
