A Note from the Executive Director

Dear Colleague,

We hope you have been able to take some time to rest over the holiday season. I am delighted to share with you a number of upcoming activities our CUGH team has created, with our partners, that are designed to support our members’ work, strengthen skills, and advocate for policies that will address urgent contemporary threats. These include our upcoming CUGH-Pulitzer Center Science Communications Workshop, new advocacy materials your networks can use when engaging with their elected officials and the public (please share them), our annual Virtual Global Health Week (free and open to all), CUGH2027 in Lima, Peru, a new section on our website devoted to current humanitarian crises, member activities, new webinars, and more. Also included is information about some of the exciting recent and upcoming activities our members have created.

Linked here is a new, short brief that describes the benefits of being a CUGH member. If you know of institutions and organizations you work with, across sectors, that are involved in improving human well-being and the sustainability of our planet, please share this brief with them and encourage them to join CUGH.

CUGH, with our global network, is always seeking to partner with organizations that share a mission common to ours. If you are applying for a grant and think that CUGH may be a useful sub-awardee partner, please reach out to us at info@cugh.org.

To maximize the impact of the efforts in this newsletter, it is vital that they are shared widely and often. Please help us to do this.

Thank you.

Update on Progress Since CUGH’s

Emergency Panel Calling for the Release of

Dr. Abu Safiya & Other Palestinian Physicians Detained & Tortured in Israel

Thank you to those who attended the emergency panel we held on July 10th on the plight of these Palestinian physicians. The actions we all need to take globally are vital to releasing these medical personnel and saving their lives. You can watch (and please share) the recording here.

Updates on our progress can be read here.

OUR REQUEST TO YOU

Statements by organizations are very important. They send a clear public message providing direction and recommendations that can produce desired outcomes. However, to realize these outcomes we need to translate words into political action. In this, the actions you take are vital.

Regardless of what country you are in, please contact your national leaders and ask them to call on the Israeli government to immediately release these physicians from detention and ensure they receive the medical care they need.

Please see this powerful letter by Dr. Roni Tamari, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York and Prof Naftali Kaminski Physician-Scientist, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, the BMJ published on the plight of these and other Palestinian medical professionals detained by Israel.

CUGH Press Release: Protect U.S.

Leadership & Support for PAHO -

Open Letter to Sign & Share

The U.S. Administration’s FY2027 budget request proposes eliminating U.S. funding for PAHO. Deadly infectious diseases and other emerging threats remain a persistent threat across the hemisphere. They are best addressed through effective collaboration amongst nations. Leaving PAHO poses a grave security risk to the United States, leaving it far less prepared to identify and respond to public health emergencies and other threats. If you are in the U.S. speak to your elected officials and ask them to uphold U.S. support for and leadership in PAHO.

CUGH Call to Action: Protect Science & Merit Based Funding for US Research

The US administration is proposing regulations that will politicize how US research funding is allocated. This will significantly weaken US scientific capabilities across disciplines and will have a profoundly negative impact on research partnerships with institutions around the world. We asked colleagues to provide their input on this matter in the US government public portal and are happy to share that the site received thousands of comments. Thank you to all who did this.

There is a next step: If you are in the US, we need you to approach your congressperson and ask them to stop these regulations. Please also speak about them publicly. Regardless of one's political persuasion, politicizing research investments will not make the US or the world healthier and more secure. This CUGH brief will provide points you can use with your elected officials.
