Summer, 2021
Greetings!

As we enjoy the last of summer, there are many exciting local cycling and active transportation projects and programs underway to expand riding opportunities and to make cycling more enjoyable and more safe in beautiful Southern Utah. Here are just a few of the highlights…
St. George Trail Projects

The City of St. George has shared with SUBA the following new trails and maintenance updates.

New Trails under design or to be constructed in the near future:

1) Virgin River South from Bloomington Park to I-15 will start in Oct or Nov.

2) Blackrock Trail from Temple Quarry down to Indian Hills Drive tentatively late fall 2021.

3) Rim Rock Trail (connecting the Virgin River Trail and Foremaster Dr./ St. George Regional Hospital trail) will be designed this year and built next year.

4) Springs Park to Mall drive will be constructed this winter/spring

5) Temple Springs trail (top of 700 East, from St. George Blvd connecting to Red Hills Pkwy) will be winter/spring

6) A construction contract to build the bike/ped tunnel under Bluff Street (between I-15 and lower Main) has been awarded and construction should begin late this Fall.
New Path
Trail Maintenance Projects:

1) Virgin River trail near Bloomington Country Club (currently using a detour): The realignment, repaving and new driving range fencing should be completed by mid-September.

2) Halfway Wash underpass at 1400 W will be under construction this coming fall. The City will be fixing the drainage issue and building a detour trail up and around the underpass (currently you ride over temporary wooden planking at this point).

3) The City will be installing new wood decking on the Virgin River Bridge in the spring
Zion Bike Trail
Zion Canyon Bike Ambassadors Needed

The Town of Springdale, in partnership with Zion National Park, is instituting a Bike Ambassador program. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of people riding bikes in Springdale and into Zion Canyon this year. However, with increasing bicycle use comes some unintended impacts: cyclists unfamiliar with Zion National Park bicycle policies, cyclists having difficulty riding in heavy tourist traffic in Springdale, cyclists unprepared for minor mechanical problems, etc.

This is where the Bike Ambassadors come in. These volunteer cyclists will ride through Springdale and Zion National Park giving support, direction, and education to cyclists. Ambassadors will do things like remind cyclists to pull over for shuttle buses in Zion, ride single file when in traffic, use hand signals to indicate turns, etc. The Ambassadors will be ready to fix a flat tire or tighten a loose bolt when needed. Ambassadors will answer cyclists' questions and give direction and suggestions about riding in the area. In general, Bike Ambassadors will help cyclists in Zion Canyon be safe, understand local protocol, and have fun.

Bike Ambassadors will be volunteers with the ability to fill the general responsibilities listed above. While final details about the program are still being worked out, Ambassadors should be able to commit to a two to four hour volunteer slot, about two times per month. Volunteer benefits include: riding in Zion Canyon on a regular basis, meeting cyclists from all over the world, making a positive impact by promoting cycling in the area, AND receiving a very nice Bike Ambassador jersey.

If you are interested in filling a Bike Ambassador volunteer slot please contact Thomas Dansie at the Springdale Town Office: tdansie@springdale.utah.gov.

UDOT wants your input! One of SUBA’s best partners is UDOT…they really understand active transportation and have deeply integrated it into their planning. UDOT is now about moving people…in all forms…not just cars and trucks. UDOT wants to know where active transportation projects are needed on state roads (eg. Southern Parkway) or what some of the current barriers are on existing roads. To help them with their planning efforts, they have launched a detailed online site where you can give them feedback and ideas in many different ways…take the quick online survey, add comments on specific projects, email UDOT directly from this site to give them your best ideas. They even have a toll-free number you can call. They want to hear from all cyclists! Please take 5 minutes and share your frustrations and good ideas on the UDOT Survey.
Volunteers Needed

One of the largest sporting events to ever be hosted in Utah is coming to St. George! (the only event larger were the 2002 Winter Olympic Games). The Ironman 70.3 World Championships will bring nearly 7000 triathletes from around the world to compete September 17 and 18, 2021. For an event this large, thousands of local volunteers will be needed over a six day period. Ironman has just launched a detailed website for all volunteer positions and an easy opportunity to sign-up on-line. Check out all the exciting volunteer positions and see the race action up close as a volunteer!

If you have basic bike repair skills (eg changing a flat tire) we need your help as bicycle or vehicle mounted Bike Tech volunteers. Ride or drive the Ironman bike course and assist racers with minor repairs. Scroll down the list to “Bike Tech” if this role interests you.
Hurricane Active Transportation Plan
The City of Hurricane has been working on an extensive Active Transportation plan that will soon be reviewed, approved and implemented by the city council. You can review the draft plan here and provide your feedback and support via the link online or directly to your elected officials. This is great news for all cyclists in Hurricane City!
