A Message from Rec Staff

Daylight Saving Time was introduced during World War I to conserve energy by reducing artificial lighting. When we "fall back" on Sunday, November 1, 2026, clocks move back one hour to standard time, granting an extra hour of sleep. This seasonal shift aligns daily schedules with natural evening sunlight.

Tarrytown Recreation Building

The Seasonal Herbalist: Stay warm and well as the temperature drops!

If you've ever wondered how generations past kept winter sniffles at bay using classic garden plants, this interactive workshop is for you. Join us as we dive into the fascinating history and everyday philosophy of herbalism, clear up the common confusion between herbal remedies and homeopathy, and cover essential safety practices.

Whether you're looking to brush up on your herbal knowledge or just curious about how to support your household naturally this season, we’ll explore key cold-weather herbs—including Thyme, Slippery Elm, Peppermint, and Calendula—along with proper preparation, dosage guidelines, and mindful safety considerations.

The best part? We’ll wrap up with an open Q&A and a cozy, guided tasting featuring 2–3 of the very herbs discussed in class!

Note: This workshop is purely educational and focuses on traditional wellness practices. As always, please consult a qualified healthcare provider regarding medical conditions, new herbal regimens, or prescription interactions.

May your winter be resilient and your cup run over with wellness!

Halloween Safety Tips from the Village of Tarrytown:

Numerous local and national sources offer guidance to ensure a safe Halloween for our neighborhoods and trick-or-treaters.

Review these essential safety tips before heading out on Saturday, October 31st:

  • Travel in groups: Ensure younger children are accompanied by an adult.
  • Keep info handy: Secure emergency contact details (name, address, phone) and allergy information to each child or trick-or-treat bag. Carry necessary emergency medications.
  • Be visible: Choose bright costumes, use flashlights, and attach reflective tape to bags and outfits.
  • Check face paint: Opt for makeup or well-ventilated masks with large eye holes. Test makeup on a small skin patch beforehand to check for allergies, and wash it off before bed.
  • Watch for flames: Avoid open flames and lit luminary bags. Remind children to "stop, drop, and roll" if clothing catches fire.
  • Stay connected: Keep a fully charged cell phone with you for emergencies.
  • Know who to call: Contact the Tarrytown Police Department Desk at 914-631-5544 for assistance, or dial 911 for emergencies. Note that mobile 911 calls route directly to the New York State Police.
  • Inspect the haul: Check all candy before eating. Discard any treats with torn wrappers, holes, or signs of tampering.
  • Offer alternatives: Consider handing out healthier snacks or fun, non-food prizes.
  • Avoid animals: Stay clear of wild animals and use extra caution around pets, which may get frightened by costumes.
  • Plan your route: Only visit well-lit homes, share your path with family, and let everyone know your intended trick-or-treat route.
  • Respect private property: Stick to sidewalks whenever possible and avoid cutting across yards.
  • Stay outside: Never enter a stranger's home or accept a ride from anyone you don't know.
  • Drive carefully: Motorists must slow down and use extreme caution throughout the evening.

The elected officials, volunteers, and staff of the Village of Tarrytown wish everyone a safe, healthy, and Happy Halloween!
