Seasonal Perspectives
Defending First Foods, sacred spaces, and stolen land
During Indigenous Peoples Month and tying indigenous wisdom, activism and ritual to Thanksgiving, this One WILPF Zoom will offer recent rights of nature legal updates and an Armistice Day memorial for peace activists we lost recently.

Ojibwe tribal attorney Frank Bibeau (active with Honor Earth) will describe the case he’s waging against the Enbridge Pipeline 5, in defense of the tribe’s treaty-protected crop of sacred wild rice in Minnesota. Enbridge has filed documents that disclose their plans to extract (steal) millions of gallons of precious water along the pipeline route, part of which goes through the wild rice crop. This case is one of only a handful in the country that asserts the ‘rights of nature’. We’ll be anxious to hear more.

And just in time for Thanksgiving, Skiowis (Christine) Nobiss of Great Plains Action Society will talk about the colonialist and white racist origins of Thanksgiving, and will describe how native ritual and ceremony has strengthened and comforted indigenous people throughout their history. For native and indigenous peoples in North America, Thanksgiving is a colonialist affront.

Since it’s also Armistice Day, we’ll open with a short tribute to Sister Megan Rice, a tireless peace activist who passed away recently.  There will also be important announcements and discussion of upcoming 2022 Solidarity Action plans.
