Former Eugene Field student repurposes unused space on school playground

A sophomore of Poplar Bluff High School found a meaningful way to give back to his former elementary school, perhaps inadvertently applying the values practiced there.

Noah Adams, 15, recently painted a sensory path on an otherwise unutilized concrete slab adjacent to the playground at Eugene Field as a service project in order to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout under Boy Scouts of America.

“Noah’s plan truly made something out of nothing,” stated Kristen Spain, Eugene Field principal. “It is a win-win because our students benefit from his service project and it helped him complete a huge goal [toward] Eagle Scout.”

‘Think win win’ is one of the habits taught as part of the Leader In Me initiative under which Eugene Field has achieved lighthouse status. A graduate of the program, Noah commented how he basically “grew up here,” referring to the elementary school in which his mother Michelle Adams also serves as a first grade teacher.

“One day I was walking through there and thought, ‘You know, there’s been nothing beyond concrete in that spot ever since I was in grade school,” Noah reflected. “I was in second grade when they put up the playground. So I decided, ‘Well, it wouldn’t hurt.’”

Over the course of multiple weekends in October, Noah prepped the site, then sketched a series of lines and shapes in the form of an obstacle course, with various sections designed to lead students through challenges such as the tightrope walk or bunny hop. He explained how the concept is similar to a hopscotch outline one might draw with chalk on a sidewalk, only he used long-lasting paint with leftover supplies he acquired from a home project.

“The sensory path is for the students to use to help with movements and to just get the wiggles out,” Michelle noted. “It has also been a big hit with the students. He gets off the bus here at Eugene Field in the afternoons and that first week he was a local celebrity.”

Before meeting with the Eagle Board of Review, which Noah anticipates happening prior to the holiday season, he was required to obtain approval for the proposal from both his scout leader and the project beneficiary. He has been a Scouts member since he was in the first grade.

Spain commented how she was impressed by the attention to detail on the blueprint that now hangs in her office. “Before this the concrete pad really wasn’t used at all… We are thrilled to be recipients of his act of service,” the principal concluded.

PBHS students named to Missouri All-State Choir

A junior will represent Poplar Bluff High School in the 2024/25 Missouri All-State Choir, along with two alternates.

Gabby Rushing has been selected to sing in the soprano section, while seniors Andrew Noble and Virginiagrace Vandewarker will serve as first alternate tenor and alto, respectively.

Elijah Bosch, a senior, and junior Cayden Innes additionally received honorable mentions out of eight PBHS students judged based on top scores during the Missouri Choral Directors Association All-District Choir audition held in recent months.

The students showcased their talents through solo and sight-reading performances, as well as by demonstrating their vocal range with the choral piece "Exultate Justi in Domino" by early Baroque composer Lodovico Grossi da Viadana, according to Joshua Allen, PBHS director of vocal music.

The All-State Choir will perform during the Missouri Music Educators Association conference Saturday, Feb. 1, at Osage Beach under the direction of conductor/clinician Dr. Eugene Rogers of the University of Michigan.

October Athletes of the Month named

The Mules Booster Club has named Olivia Thetford and Alex Bedell of Poplar Bluff High School the October Athletes of the Month, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Alex, a senior soccer player, scored 14 goals with 11 assists for the season. He earned first-team honors as both a SEMO All-Conference and Class 3, District 1 All-District student-athlete. A two-year academic letterman outside of the field, Alex is an active member of clubs that include the Mule Barn, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Family, Career & Community Leaders of America, according to his coaching staff.

“Alex is a fantastic leader on the soccer team. He consistently pushed his teammates to perform better during games and practices. Many of our players work harder during drills because of Alex’s presence,” said Mike Anderle, assistant coach. “…He plans on continuing to play soccer in college, and we know wherever he goes he will bring his work ethic and love for the game that he has demonstrated while playing on our team.”

Olivia, a senior golfer, is a three-time letterman and has qualified for All-District and All-State twice—making her the first female golfer in PBHS history to do so. She has qualified for state competition three times in total. In the classroom, she has maintained straight A’s and B’s to boot, according to her coaching staff.

“Olivia is a determined athlete who always strives for excellence,” said Tyler Davis, her coach. “She is a great competitor and maintains a cool and level-head while competing. She knows what she wants to accomplish and when she falls short, she works to ensure that it is accomplished the next time.”
