“Shameika” is a young mom and domestic abuse survivor. She came to us for help because her husband had taken one of her children and was refusing to bring the child back.
In this emergency situation, Shameika’s Legal Aid attorney filed an “ex parte” motion with the court. Ex parte orders are not common and require proof that waiting for a hearing and notifying the other party would result in harm. Shameika’s attorney successfully argued that this was in fact the case, and the judge granted the order.
Following the return of her child, we helped Shameika pursue a divorce, negotiating over several months to work out the details and gaining primary physical custody of the children for Shameika.
We are so grateful to Sherah and "Shameika" for allowing us to share their stories so you can see the power of legal aid in our clients' lives.
