The Maryland Theatre hosts
Kris Kristofferson and The Strangers
Tuesday, April 23, 2019 • 7:00pm
Kris Kristofferson has been making things happen his entire life. Born in Texas and raised in a military family, he was a Golden Gloves boxer who studied creative writing at Pomona College in California. The Phi Beta Kappa graduate earned a Rhodes scholarship to study literature at Oxford, where he boxed, played rugby and continued to write songs. After graduating from Oxford, Kristofferson served in the army as an Airborne Ranger helicopter pilot and achieved the rank of Captain. In 1965, Kristofferson turned down an assignment to teach at West Point and, inspired by songwriters like Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, moved to Nashville to pursue his music.
After struggling in Music City for several years, Kristofferson achieved remarkable success as a country songwriter at the start of the 1970s.
His songs "Me and Bobby McGee," "Help Me Make It Through the Night," "Sunday Morning Coming Down," and "For the Good Times," all chart-topping hits, helped redefine country songwriting. By 1987, it was estimated that more than 450 artists had recorded Kristofferson's compositions.
His renown as a songwriter triggered Kristofferson's successful career as a performer and that, in turn, brought him to the attention of Hollywood, leading to his flourishing career as a film actor. Kristofferson has acted in more than 70 films including "A Star is Born" for which he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in 1977. Other cult favorites Kristofferson appeared in include; "Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore", the "Blade" Trilogy and "Lone Star". His more recent films include; "He’s Just Not That Into You" and "Dolphin Tale".
Heralded as an artist's artist, the three-time GRAMMY winner has recorded 30 albums, including three with pals Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings as part of the Highwaymen. Kristofferson has spent three decades performing concerts all over the world.
In addition to many other awards, Kristofferson is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, winner of the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriter Hall of Fame and was honored with the American Veteran's Association's "Veteran of the Year Award" in 2002. In 2014, Kristofferson was honored with a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award and the PEN Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award.

Potomac Playmakers Auditions
- One Act Play Festival
Haven Lutheran Church
1035 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742
04/29/2019, 04/30/2019
7:00pm to 9:00pm
The Potomac Playmakers announce auditions for the Fourth Annual One-Act Play Festival By Area Playwrights! For the last several years, the Playmakers have given area playwrights the opportunity to see their original plays performed live on stage. For the second year in a row, a playwriting competition was held for playwrights from Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. From the wealth of plays submitted, three original pieces were accepted. They are as follows – “God and Other Well-Intentioned Strangers” by Greg Berezuk. In this drama, a bereaved father takes a moment to himself outside of the reception following his daughter’s funeral. His daughter’s passing has shaken his faith, as he is consumed with the question of “WHY.” After a conversation with his sister, the man finds himself face-to-face with God. What follows next is a conversation that everyone who has experienced a profound loss can relate to. The play calls for a cast of three, with one male performer in his fifties and older and two females, one in her fifties and older, and one female in her 20’s and up. “God and Other Well-Intentioned Strangers” will be directed by Jim Zuna. “Sisters Of The Locker Room” by Nancy L. Funk. In this comic piece, a group of middle-aged and senior ladies banter in the gym locker room after a tough workout, sharing their tales of love and loss. During their conversation, the ladies learn that one of their own has been left by her husband for another woman. The ladies decide to take matters into their own hands by kidnapping the wayward husband and putting him on trial! The script for “Sisters” calls for nine females in their 40’s and older, and one male performer in his late 40’s. “Sisters Of The Locker Room” will be directed by Wanda Dittmann. “Affair At The Hotel Opal” by Jeffrey N. Johnson – In this dramatic piece, a man and his wife are in Paris trying to track down places where his father spent time during World War II. With photographs in his hand, his wife’s input, and the assistance of the local barkeep and staff, the man tries to learn about the father that he never knew. And what does the “Lady Madonna” have to do with it all? The script for “Opal” calls for a cast of four men in their twenties and older, and three women in their forties and older. “Affair At The Hotel Opal” will be directed by Jeff Marcum.
Auditions for the Fourth Annual One-Act Play Festival By Area Playwrights will be held April 29, 2019 and April 30, 2019 at Haven Lutheran Church, located at 1035 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Maryland 21742. Auditions start at 7:00 pm and will consist of cold readings from the scripts. Performances will be July 12-14, 2019 at The Women’s Club in Hagerstown.
