Yizkor services for Yom Kippur

At the Yizkor service for Yom Kippur, Rabbi David will announce the names of those who departed since the last High Holy Days. If the name of your departed loved one has been included in our weekly remembrances during the past year, you do not need to submit their name. If you are not sure or if you have additional names to include for the Yizkor announcement, please email Sue Prousa

High Holiday Class with Rabbi David

U'Teshuvah (Return), U'Tefillah (Prayer), U'Tzedakah (Righteousness)

At CBS on Tuesdays: 08/22, 08/29, and 09/05 at 7pm - 8:30pm

These words, U'Teshuvah (Return/Atonement), U'Tefillah (Prayer/Spirit), U'Tzedakah (Justice/Righteousness)which come from the U'netaneh Tokef prayer are three pillars of the Days of Awe and of entering new Jewish year. Often the High Holidays approach, and we are asked to do introspective work, but we haven't had enough time to adequately prepare ourselves spiritually or emotionally.

Join Rabbi David and CBS members for a three-part Adult Education series built around these three themes, and together we will explore how they are woven into the High Holidays and how we can both reflect on the year that has passed, and set intentions for the year ahead around these important themes.

No experience necessary to participate, and feel free to attend just one or all of the sessions. Please email Lesa to RSVP. Zoom link will be available after RSVP.

Break the Fast

Member Services is coordinating a Light Break the Fast immediately following Yom Kippur afternoon service. If you'd like to contribute please contact Rachelle Sheffer at memberservices@napershalom.org

As the name suggests, Beyond the Bima will feature a range of short, snackable stories. Some could be on very traditional Jewish themes and values, Torah teachings, etc. Others could be about current events, education, nature, spirituality, holidays, personalities, members, sports, art and so forth. We hope that these videos will put a smile on members’ faces and seed a thought in their minds; overtime making our all members feel more connected to CBS. Find new and past videos on our website.

Volunteers sought for Purim Spiel 2024

Is anybody interested in helping to produce a Purim spiel next spring? If so, please email me below and let me know how you’d like to help. No decisions have been made, so everything is open. We have scripts and music from earlier shows, including Purim: the Musical (some music not transcribed), Passover: the Musical, Holy Neuteronomy, and Jacob the Trickster. DVDs are available in the library. Or we could create another show or take highlights and put them together. Your input is requested!

We need people for all cast roles and all crew as well. In particular, we need a director and a music director. I’m also hoping to engage our clergy for cameo appearances. All ages are welcome, but anyone under 10 requires a responsible adult or older sibling to be present. Please email me to volunteer or provide suggestions.

CBS Preschool Registration for 2023-2024 is now open!

We are a mixed-age, Jewish preschool for children ages 2-5 years old. We instill Jewish Values early on in your child's life, while preparing them for Kindergarten. Our teacher is a master-level teacher with 25 years of experience. For more information, please contact Wendy Adler.

Chesed and Tikun Olam

The Tikun Olam heroes of the week are the congregants who made our Open House a very successful event. There were many attendees. There was dancing, good food and fun outside for the children. All the planning and preparation was done by Bridge and Wojtek Biernacki, Amy Ganden as well as Elizabeth Sigale who did baking. Realizing that there was not enough help, Paula Fremerman, Mike and Ann Rabin, Elizabeth Sigale, John Miller, Liam Wagner, Mickey Passman, Susan Agrest, Rita Kramen and Jan Strauss pitched in. If not for these last-minute helpers, Bridge, Wojtek and Amy would have had problems getting the food out and the set-up done as well as the clean-up. PLEASE be a tikun olam hero and volunteer ahead of time so we can continue these lovely events. You are needed! Thanks to all who helped and all who will commit to help in the future!

Pastoral Care Updates and Requests

We want to have the most up to date list of members of the community who are in need of ongoing pastoral support so that Rabbi David is aware of who is in need of care. This could be an elder living alone in a senior community who would like the occasional call or visit from Rabbi David, or someone you know who is grieving or in need of support (and that person can absolutely be you), or other reasons for ongoing pastoral care. Should you have names for this list - either of family, friends or yourself - please email Rabbi David at rabbidavid@napershalom.org

Ongoing Social/Education Programs

Thursday Text Study Returns, August 3 - 11:30am - 12:30 pm led by Rabbi David

Tikkun Middot: August 3rd - Sept. 7th

The foundation of this series is to explore the Jewish history and practice of Mussar: a Jewish ethical, cultural and spiritual movement from Eastern Europe that blossomed prior to the Holocaust. Tikkun Middot, literally meaning "repairing our character traits," is a program that is meant to help us positively develop qualities of mind and heart in a Jewish framework. Over the course of the six weeks, through the study of Jewish texts, combined with invitations to try simple daily practices, we will strengthen important ethical/soul traits as we head into the High Holidays together.  Please contact Rabbi David for the Zoom link if you wish to participate remotely.

Saturday Morning Torah Study, Saturdays at 9am

Rabbi David leads the Torah study class on Shabbat mornings at 9 am in person and online in the synagogue Library prior to Saturday morning Shabbat worship.

Jewish History: taught by Dr. Joe Davis on Sunday mornings, 11 sessions from Sep 10 to Nov 19 from 9:00-10:15 AM, on Zoom. This is a continuation of the popular series that has been taught (first in person and then on Zoom) for the past 15 years! Click here for flyer. Worksheets will be available soon for download.

Adult Bnai Mitzvah: First Or Second Time Around

Did you have a B’nai Mitzvah as a child but didn’t really learn as much as you would have liked? Or perhaps you’ve never had the chance and would love the opportunity? If you answered “yes” to either of those questions then this class is for you!

Starting September 10, 2023 you will embark on a journey to expand your Jewish knowledge as you learn more about participating in the Jewish community. The course will end with class participation in  a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah service tailor made to fit your goals! What you will learn: Improve Hebrew Reading - Shabbat Shacharit - Jewish Holidays & Studies - Torah Trope & Leining

Please contact the teacher, Tom Wolffwith questions. More details can be found on our website.
