NATIONAL CASHEW DAY

A favorite snacking and party nut is recognized each year on November 23rd during National Cashew Day.

The cashew nut is a seed harvested from the cashew tree. The tree originated in Northeastern Brazil. However, it is now widely grown in tropical climates for its cashew apples and nuts.

With leathery leaves arranged spirally, the evergreen cashew tree grows as tall as 32 feet high and often has an irregularly shaped trunk. The flowers are small, starting out pale green then turning reddish, with each one having five slender, acute petals.

The largest cashew tree in the world covers about 81,000 sq. ft. and is located in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.

Cashew Facts

  • The cashew tree has a fruit called the “cashew apple.” Its fragile skin makes it unsuitable for transport.
  • Latin Americans make a fruit drink from the cashew apple.
  • The Cashew causes fewer allergic reactions than other nuts or peanuts.
  • Although native to northeast Brazil, the Portuguese took the cashew plant to Goa, India, between 1560 and 1565. From Goa, it spread throughout Southeast Asia and, eventually, Africa.
  • We often see peanuts, pecans, walnuts, and other nuts sold in the shell. Due to the toxic nature of the cashew nut's shell, this is not possible.
  • Speaking of the shell, the Cashew is not a true nut. They do not develop a hard wall around the seed as hazelnuts or walnuts do. Cashews instead have a lining around the seed that is filled with a caustic fluid.
  • This nut is an excellent source of antioxidants.
  • It's also a source of dietary trace minerals: copper, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorous.
  • Cashew oil is a dark yellow oil for cooking or salad dressing pressed from cashew nuts.
  • Many parts of the plant are used for medicinal purposes.

There are so many ways to enjoy this fabulous nut. How will you be celebrating?

Please be diligent about following parking signs and only park in clearly marked spaces with perpendicular markings. DO NOT park in the bike lanes, as this makes our market space unsafe to bikers and pedestrians and threatens our ability to continue operating the market here. No parking allowed on the neutral ground. Please don't pull up into the market driveway for recycling pick ups or drop offs. Thank you for understanding!

What does "quotha" mean?

Perhaps

Indeed

Again

Never

quotha

/ˈkwō-THə/

Definition: An exclamation used to express disbelief or irony, often preceding a quote or statement made by someone else.

Origin: Late 16th century, a contraction of "quoth he" or "quoth she," from the Old English "cweðan" meaning "to say."

Example: "He claims he can run a marathon without training, quotha, 'I’m in great shape!'"

"Indeed" encapsulates the essence of what "quotha" means. It serves as an expression of skepticism or irony, often used when relaying what someone else has said. When someone hears a claim that seems dubious or exaggerated, they might respond with "quotha" to signal disbelief or to highlight the absurdity of the statement. This term, steeped in historical usage, provides a nuanced way to engage with dialogue, adding a layer of commentary that resonates with the speaker’s perspective. Thus, "quotha" becomes an effective rhetorical device in conversation.

Glen David Andrews, a native son and a beloved musician of New Orleans, is a warrior for cultural preservation at a time when indigenous traditions are being threatened in the city.

NATIONAL EAT A CRANBERRY DAY

On November 23rd, National Eat a Cranberry Day encourages us to take a bite of the bright red cranberry. But brace yourself!

Found in acidic bogs throughout the cooler regions of the northern hemisphere, cranberries are a group of evergreen dwarf shrubs, or trailing vines, that grow up to 7 feet long and 8 inches high. Their stems are slender and wiry, and they have small evergreen leaves.

The cranberry flowers are dark pink with very distinct reflexed petals, leaving the style and stamens fully exposed and pointing forward. The fruit of the cranberry plant is a berry that is larger than the leaves and is initially white but when ripe, turns a deep red.

CRANBERRY FACTS

  • Cranberries' acidity overwhelms their sweetness.
  • They're a major commercial crop in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin.
  • However, Wisconsin leads in cranberry production with over half of U.S. production.
  • We mostly find cranberries processed into products such as juice, sauce, jam, or sweetened dried cranberries.
  • Cranberry sauce is considered an indispensable part of a traditional American Thanksgiving meal.
  • Due to their nutrient content and antioxidant qualities, raw cranberries are marketed as a superfruit.
  • There are three to four species of cranberry, classified into two sections.
  • Producers make white cranberry juice from cranberries harvested after they've matured but before they turn their characteristic dark red color.
  • Some producers make cranberry wine in the cranberry-growing regions of the United States.
  • Laboratory studies indicate that extracts containing cranberry may have anti-aging effects.

The word cranberry comes from “craneberry”; first named by the early European settlers in America who felt the expanding flower, stem, calyx, and petals resembled the neck, head, and bill of a crane.

The Most Commonly Confused Words and How to Choose the Right One

Confusing words can trip up even the most seasoned writers, leading to misunderstandings and miscommunications. The nuances of the English language can make it difficult to know which word to use in a particular context. In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the most commonly confused words, providing definitions, examples, and tips to help you choose the right one every time.

Affect vs. Effect

One of the most common pairs of confused words is "affect" and "effect."

"Affect" is typically used as a verb meaning to influence something. For example, you might say, "The weather can greatly affect your mood." On the other hand, "effect" is usually a noun that refers to the result of a change. For instance, "The effect of the new policy was noticeable immediately."

To remember the difference, think of the acronym RAVEN: Remember, Affect is a Verb, Effect is a Noun.

Their vs. There vs. They’re

Another trio that often causes confusion is "their," "there," and "they're."

"Their" is a possessive pronoun, used to indicate ownership. For example, "Their dog is very friendly." "There" is an adverb that refers to a place or location. For instance, "The book is over there on the table." Lastly, "they're" is a contraction of "they are." You might say, "They're going to the concert tonight."

A helpful tip is to substitute "they are" in your sentence. If it fits, use "they're." If you’re indicating possession, use "their," and if you’re referring to a place, it’s "there."

Your vs. You’re

Similar to the previous trio, "your" and "you’re" are frequently mixed up.

"Your" is a possessive form of "you," indicating ownership, as in "Is this your book?" On the other hand, "you’re" is a contraction for "you are." For example, "You’re going to love this movie."

To ensure you’re using the correct form, try substituting "you are" into your sentence. If it fits, use "you’re." If it doesn’t, then "your" is likely the correct choice.

Its vs. It’s

The confusion between "its" and "it’s" is another common pitfall.

"Its" is a possessive pronoun that indicates ownership, such as in "The cat licked its paw." Conversely, "it’s" is a contraction for "it is" or "it has." For example, "It’s going to rain today."

To clarify the usage, if you can replace the word with "it is" and the sentence still makes sense, use "it’s." If you’re indicating possession, stick with "its."

Then vs. Than

"Then" and "than" are often confused due to their similar sounds but different meanings.

"Then" is an adverb that refers to time, as in "First we went to the store, then we went home." Meanwhile, "than" is a conjunction used in comparisons, such as "She is taller than her brother."

To avoid mixing these up, remember that "then" relates to time, whereas "than" is for comparisons.

Who vs. Whom

The difference between "who" and "whom" can be particularly tricky, especially in informal writing.

"Who" is used as a subject pronoun, meaning it performs the action of the verb. For example, "Who is going to the party?" In contrast, "whom" is used as an object pronoun, meaning it receives the action of the verb. For instance, "To whom should I address the letter?"

A quick way to decide which to use is to rephrase the question with "he" or "him." If "he" fits, use "who." If "him" fits, then "whom" is the appropriate choice.

Loose vs. Lose

The distinction between "loose" and "lose" is often overlooked, yet it’s quite simple.

"Loose" is an adjective that means not tight or free, as in "The shirt is too loose on me." On the other hand, "lose" is a verb meaning to misplace something or be defeated, such as "I hope I don’t lose my keys."

To remember the difference, think of the double "o" in "loose" resembling the shape of something that is not tight, while "lose" has one "o," indicating the act of misplacing.

Complement vs. Compliment

The words "complement" and "compliment" sound similar but have very different meanings.

"Complement" is a noun or verb that refers to something that completes or goes well with something else, as in "The wine is a perfect complement to the meal." Conversely, "compliment" is a noun or verb that means to praise someone, as in "She gave him a compliment on his new haircut."

To differentiate, remember that "complement" has an 'e' for completing, while "compliment" has an 'i' for praise.

Capital vs. Capitol

Lastly, "capital" and "capitol" are often confused, especially in discussions about government.

"Capital" can refer to a city that serves as the seat of government, wealth in the form of money or assets, or uppercase letters. For example, "The capital of France is Paris," and "She invested her capital wisely." "Capitol," however, refers specifically to a building where a legislative assembly meets, as

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon,November 25

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

At that stroke of midnight on November 21, 2024, oenophiles all over France will begin their jubilant celebration in honor of the end of the harvest and the uncorking of the Beaujolais Nouveau. Hundreds of events throughout France will be held with fireworks, music, and, of course, tastings, as “tout le monde” vie to sample the current batch of Beaujolais Nouveau - light, fruit-driven wines made with barely fermented Gamay grapes that are best consumed as soon as possible - literally. But, never fear, there are 3 different quality levels of Beaujolais above Nouveau and these are the ones we get excited about!

The entry-level wines that are simply labeled Beaujolais, are made from grapes grown throughout the Beaujolais region, mainly in the south. These also tend to be on the fruit-forward side and are meant to be enjoyed in the first year or two after the vintage. Beaujolais-Villages wines are based on Gamay grapes that were grown in the northern part of the Beaujolais region, specifically 38 permitted villages. And Cru Beaujolais are grown in any of ten specific northern locales whose typically granitic soils (though they are far from uniform in composition and character) can produce the most age-worthy and complex of all red wines from Beaujolais. So, needless to say, the least expensive wines generally come from the south, and the more expensive and age-worthy wines come from the north. And if this was all you learned about Beaujolais, you’d know enough to dive in and start learning by tasting - but as always goes with wine, a lot of the fun is in the details.

We are here to help with those details as we taste different wines from the 3 categories and talk about the terroir that makes them special. What is Beaujolais Blanc? What is the difference between a village-level wine and a cru? What's the stylistic difference between one Cru and another?? David Sobiesk will present as we learn about one of our favorite regions and pick out some of the best wines ever to pair with your holiday meals!  The event is sold out but you can join our waitlist here, Gamay

Learn a little, drink a little, and have some fun with us!

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
