Greetings!
We are in the essential community and routine-building phase of our school year, where we focus on positive relationships and behaviors that will allow for risk-taking and growth in the future. Parents/guardians, you are part of this too, we're looking forward to engaging with many of you in our programs later this week.
Happy Monday,
Nelia

| 4-8 OVERNIGHT FALL FIELD TRIP | |
This year's K-8 Fall Field Trip will be to Copper Cannon Camp in Franconia, NH. 4-8th graders will be there September 2-4, and K-3rd graders will be there for a day trip only on Thursday, September 3.
Schedule: Wednesday we will depart by bus just after 8:00 and then unpack; play games; enjoy the waterfront; choose between archery, hiking, or drama; siesta in our cabins; do and talk about doing some hard things; and go on a night walk in the dark. Thursday we will welcome the K-3rd graders to rotate through playing kickball, making art on the theme of their houses, playing some field games, and design tracks in a sandy hill to race softballs down, all in house groups. After younger students leave, older students will continue with activities like soccer, ultimate, archery, and board games, and have an evening campfire. On Friday after packing and cleaning, we will do service projects for the Scouts and wrap up with reflections on the trip, and then return to school by bus. There will be an optional early pick up for all students on Friday, September 4th, anytime after 2:00 pm. Please email Krystal and your child(ren)'s teacher/advisor to let them know if you'll be picking up early. The Extended Day Program will also run as usual until 5:00.

Thank you to our co-coaches Sean and Ty for leading the team this year! If students plan to play for the 5-8th grade team, they/their families should communicate directly with Ty.
Practice Time: There are no after-school practices for the Riverside soccer team. Most of their skill development happens with Sean during PE classes throughout the fall. Team players are also encouraged to join Ty's soccer elective, which meets Mondays and Thursdays at 2:15, but that is not required.
Game Schedule - please mark your calendars, let Ty know if there are games your player cannot attend, and plan your own transportation (we will post navigation links each week here). There may be updates to this schedule in future memos:
- Friday, 9/11 @ Rivendell, 4:30
- Monday, 9/14 vs Kingdom East, 4:30
- Monday, 9/21 @ Monroe, 4:30
- Thursday, 9/24 vs. St. Johnsbury, 4:00
- Monday, 9/28 @ LTS v.s Kingdom East, 5:00
- Tuesday, 9/29 @ Barnet, 4:30
- Tuesday, 10/6 vs. Monroe, 5:00
- Thursday, 10/8 @ St. Johnsbury, 4:00
- Wednesday, 10/14 vs. Barnet, 4:30

As we move to cut the amount of paperwork for families (and excess printing), we prefer to share the family handbooks in digital form. It is the expectation that parents read and are familiar with the handbooks each year.
While we don’t expect all students to read it as thoroughly as parents will, please consider how best to involve your children in taking the contents of the Handbook seriously: a 7-8th grader might read it entirely, a 4-5th grader might read sections you recommend, you might talk with your 1-2nd grader about items you feel are important.

Does Riverside have the most up-to-date version of your child’s immunization records? If there might be a reason for an update since last year, please submit that documentation to Nelia on or before the first day of school.
Kindergarten Families: This is the year for DTaP, IPV (polio), MMR, and Varicella (chicken pox) boosters. Please schedule this appointment for early fall, if you haven’t already, and share the updated records with us immediately after.
7th Grade Families: This is the year for a DTaP booster, known as a Tdap. Please schedule this appointment for early fall, if you haven’t already, and share the updated records with us immediately after.
Regarding Varicella (Chicken Pox): If your child had the chicken pox illness, instead of the vaccine, you must complete the History of Disease form.
Regarding Religious Exemptions: If you choose to exempt your child from immunizations for religious reasons, you must sign the exemption form at the beginning of each school year.
Regarding Medical Exemptions: If you choose to exempt your child from immunizations for medical reasons, your health care provider must sign the Medical Exemption form.
| | PLEASE LABEL PERSONAL ITEMS | |
We all know having special personal items labeled with a name makes them much easier to keep track of! We ask that all items your child brings to school, that are outer layers or carried in hand, be labeled with your child's/family's name.
- sweatshirts
- raincoats
- vests
- jackets
- water bottles
- lunch bags, boxes, and small containers
- backpacks
- winter snow gear (snow pants, hats, gloves, mittens, neckies)
If you'd like to order labels, a portion of (*LINK FIXED*) sales from Mabels Labels will be donated to Riverside. Search for The Riverside School in Lyndonville in the search bar at that link, and shop away!

This company has really great outdoor gear including rain and snow suits, rain and snow boots, fleece, base layers, and lots more. If we have enough orders to reach the $300 minimum, we can get everything 50% off. You can search the website here, and note the item, color, and size you would like, and then use this form to place your order. Sean HIGHLY recommends the rain suits (he loves his!), especially for middle school students who may not always have the best attire for outdoor activities. Once the items are delivered, you will be charged through your school store account. Deadline for orders is September 18.
| | FROM OUR PARENT COMMUNITY | Riverside relies so much on parents/guardians to support our programs and the sustainability of our school. We hope this picture helps you understand the variety of ways you can contribute to our mutual success, and that you will each find the way that works for you. The parent community is like our beloved Cedar Circle: they wrap us in the strength and support we need to be a nurturing place to play and grow. These efforts are led by parents Molly Moghari (8th grader Emmett and 6th grader Bryn) and Tonia Brown (4th grader Sofia and 1st grader Lydia). | |
To say a bit more about a few of the "trees" in our "circle":
Current Fundraiser Toward our $25,000 Goal:
Check out the bulbs and potted mums sale, with $3 from each plant going to support Riverside's programs. Order yours here. The deadline for ordering potted mums in five colors (white, purple, red, orange, or yellow) is September 2, with pick up at school on Friday, September 11. Bulbs and other items can be ordered until September 30 and will be shipped directly.
Our Parent Advisory Group is made up of 1-2 parents at each grade level who act as mentors for the rest of the parent community. They facilitate communication and welcome all parents/guardians to their four meetings during the school year. If you have any questions about goings on at school, these are great resources for you:
- PK: Laryssa Fortier and Malcom Cheney
- K: Mariah Whitbread-Hardman
- 1: Tonia Brown, Lizzie Wemyss
- 2: Shari Apotheker
- 3: Rebecca and Collin Gillespie
- 4: Paige Lee
- 5: Kate Renner
- 6-8: Molly Moghari, Jessica Pollard, Katie DesJardins
Volunteer Opportunities abound, and if you didn't get a chance to sign up on one of the paper sheets on Monday evening, you may have seen this email last week with the digital versions of those same sign up sheets. Please take a look and choose a few links to follow that feel right for you. In most cases, signing up is not a commitment, simply persmission for us to email you when that kind of need arises, and at that point you can join or decline.
