A REFLECTION FROM FR. PERRY

All Saints’ Day is Here!

I have really come to look forward to our annual commemoration of All Saints’ Day. After Christmas and Easter, it has quickly become my next favorite day of of the Church year. Hopefully, you are asking yourself, “Why is that, Perry?” because even if you’re not asking  I am going to tell you anyway.

The way we remember All Saints’ Day every year is a beautiful and joyful reflection of the community here at All Saints’. And although this is not another plug for our Annual Fund Campaign, I would like to share how the philosophy and theology for our new language surrounding all our fundraising efforts (Guardianship: Past, Present, Forever) is tied to the fabric of our community.

All Saints’ as we know it and have received it started right here on this corner of North Central Phoenix 75 years ago by a group of faithful and visionary believers. They met in an orchard and were part of a congregation that didn’t even have a name, but they believed in the work they were called to do. They started worshiping in the barn and kids had Sunday School in the old farmhouse. On the outside, it still looked like McVay Ranch, but the people gathering here week after week become something different: The Community of All Saints’. On the evening of November 1, we will gather in the Close where many of those founding members rest to remember their legacy with music and prayers, and in so doing, we will remind ourselves that we are partakers in that same legacy and are called to do the same work — welcome and serve all and build a strong and faithful community.

And in some ways, that brings us to the present. Our All Saints’ commemorations highlight all the things about All Saints’ today that help to make us a “community of welcome and spiritual nourishment.” Because there are several prominent features of that community, I’m going to mention only a couple of them here, starting with the choir. On Sunday, our choir will sing not one but TWO choral masses: Charles Wood’s Missa Portae Honoris in the morning and Eleanor Daley’s Requiem in the evening. I am grateful for the commitment and for the community of all our choirs, from the St. Nicholas Choristers to the Chamber Choir. In the evening, after the Requiem, we will have an opportunity to gather and share snacks and fellowship in the St. Barbara Rooms.

People joke with me that All Saints’ is a foodie church now, but I don’t think that is a bad thing: Food brings people together, and I am grateful to our staff and all our hospitality volunteers for creating so many opportunities for us to share a snack or a meal or even just a few donut holes for the sake of building community.

And when I think about that community at All Saints’, I cannot help but think about the future that is taking shape here before our eyes. Last Sunday, our Youth did an unbelievable job leading our worship, and this Sunday, we will celebrate with four young people who will be Confirmed (plus 8 adults who will be Confirmed, Received, or Reaffirm their faith!) at the 10am service. These new members—of all ages—are the future of our community, and I am grateful for the experiences and gifts that each of them bring to All Saints’.

On All Saints’ Day, we begin the service with one of my favorite Collects in the Book of Common Prayer and remind ourselves that we are knit together in one communion. And to me, that is what makes All Saints’ so special. We have a proud and rich heritage, but this community does not just exist in service registers and historical documents: We are still here, doing our best to love God and each other while we serve our neighbors. And with God’s help, we will pass this community and that legacy on to future generations who will also be knit into that very same communion for those same purposes. Thank you for being part of what makes All Saints’ so special. I am grateful to be knit into this communion with you.

In 2027, we remember that we are one body with many members, and each of us have something we can give.  We hope that everyone will consider supporting the Annual Fund at whatever level is comfortable financially, remembering that no pledge is too small and every pledge makes a difference. With that, we recognize that it will be easier for some people to make a gift of their time, a commitment to join the Legacy Circle, or a one-time gift to support our campus renovation this year.

Thank you for all the ways you contribute to  All Saints’. You are an important part of this body, and we are truly grateful for you.

Women of the Bible

FALL 2026: SECOND & FOURTH TUESDAYS

10:30am in the St. Barbara Meeting Rooms on Oct 27 | Nov 17 & 24

Reading about the women in the Bible reveals a great deal more than simply the stories of a few individuals. Through the women’s trials and triumphs, the text offers various (sometimes contradictory) pictures of gender, family life, and relationships. Our modern understanding of gender may not translate directly onto the functions of gender in the Bible.
“Women in the Bible” sheds new light on familiar characters like Mary Magdalene in the New Testament and Sarah, Abraham’s wife in the Hebrew Bible. It also studies characters who are less well known to many Bible readers, such as the city of Babylon, styled as a whore in the Book of Revelation. Through the stories of these women, discover how gender can inform your reading as you explore how these stories relate to your own faith journey.”

September 8:    Sarah | Genesis 16, 17, and 21
September 22: Tamar | Genesis 38, 2 Samuel 13
October 6:   NOTE DATE CHANGE Women Warrior  | Judges 4 and 5
October 27:  Woman of Valor | Proverbs 31:10-31
November 17: Woman at the Well | John 4:5-30 and 39-42

November 24:  Whore of Babylon |  Revelation 17-18

Nanette's Parting Shot

How A Simple Suggestion Takes Wings

It was more than a year ago, that a “Barn Dad” where Tiger, my horse, lives commented that his kids love Bluey and that I should watch it sometime.

AI would comment: "Bluey" is an Australian animated series that follows a Blue Heeler puppy and her family, showcasing themes of imagination and family dynamics. The show has gained popularity for its relatable content and engaging storytelling.

Now, I have many Bluey and Bingo watchers in my household. The 4 dogs watch in the family room on the “Big TV” all day while I am working at All Saints’. The 2 birds love these pups' adventures in the Bird Room, 24/7. The cats in the CATIO now also tune in, as they like to watch or listen. Remarkably, all 3 televisions are tuned to their 24-hour adventures on YouTube, but they're never on the same cartoon at the same time. The topics are really relevant, and the kids and parents in the program act authentically, not like TV characters.

I have spent many a moment bonding with my furry or feathered friends by sitting with them and watching the show. Interestingly enough, I have heard Episcopal/Anglican hymns and classical music as the musical themes of many episodes.

In fact, the musical theme of my personal favorite episode, Sleepytime (Season 2, Episode 26), is the wonderful Anglican hymn, “O God, Beyond All Praising.” Music Director Tom refers to it as OGBAP! It will be the closing hymn at Mark’s funeral. When you hear it, you will say, “Really good hymn!”

So sometimes a little suggestion about something that seems trite or unrelated takes on greater importance than you could ever imagine. That Holy Spirit works overtime in my household these days. To that end, keep your mind open to possibilities, even with the smallest ideas.

Hope to see you here this weekend for

worship, fellowship, and service All Saints' style.

We are so honored to be that meaningful place for your spiritual refreshment, compassion, and kindness.
