As we celebrate Caribbean American Heritage Month, I want to take a moment to recognize and honor the rich culture, history, and countless contributions of Caribbean Americans throughout Broward County and across our nation. The Caribbean community has played a vital role in shaping the vibrant spirit of our neighborhoods through its resilience, creativity, entrepreneurship, faith, and deep sense of community. This month is an opportunity to celebrate the traditions, music, food, and cultural heritage that continue to inspire and unite us, while also acknowledging the many Caribbean American leaders, families, and organizations whose impact can be felt in every corner of our community. As your Broward County Commissioner, I am proud to stand alongside our Caribbean American residents in recognizing the strength, diversity, and excellence they bring to District 7 and beyond. May we continue to uplift and celebrate the rich legacy and lasting contributions of the Caribbean community today and for generations to come. | |

Division Spotlight: Broward County Emergency Management Division
As hurricane season begins, I want to highlight the Broward County Emergency Management Division, a vital resource dedicated to helping residents prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies. The Division works year-round to coordinate disaster preparedness efforts, provide critical safety information, and ensure our community is ready for hurricanes, severe weather, and other emergencies. Residents are encouraged to develop a family emergency plan, build a disaster supply kit, and sign up for AlertBroward to receive timely emergency notifications and updates. Taking steps to prepare now can make a significant difference when severe weather threatens our community.
For more information, residents may visit Broward.org/Hurricane or call 954-831-3900.
| Public Safety Reminder Ahead of World Cup Activities | |
As Broward County prepares for increased international visitors surrounding World Cup activities, Broward County’s Office of Regional Communications and Technology continues working with national partners to understand better and address challenges international visitors may face when calling 9-1-1 without a U.S. based phone.
International visitors are encouraged to connect to a U.S wireless network upon arrival and call 9-1-1 directly in an emergency. Callers should stay on the line, even if the connection takes longer than expected, and clearly provide their location before describing the emergency. Residents and visitors are also encouraged to stay alert and report suspicious activity. Remember: If You See Something, Say Something.
| Future Filmmakers Start Here | Do you have a young filmmaker in your community? NSU University School – one of Broward County’s valued partners – is bringing back its Film Forward summer camp in Fort Lauderdale, giving students entering grades 8-12 a chance to step behind the camera and bring their ideas to life. Over one week, campers will collaborate on a short film while learning directly from industry pros, covering everything from development to cinematography and editing. No experience needed, just creativity. Camp runs from July 21-31, 9 AM to 3 PM. Deadline to apply is June 15. In response to recent storms that have increased mosquito activity, the County's Public Works & Environmental Services Department will be conducting aerial spraying over portions of Broward - including Pembroke Pines.
The spray is scheduled to occur at night between Saturday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 9, 2026 and will take place between 12AM and 6AM.
The spray will target nuisance mosquitoes who are strong fliers and aggressive biters, often traveling many miles from their breeding sites.
Residents with breathing difficulties should remain indoors during spraying.
To help decrease the amount of mosquitos in our area, residents are asked to minimize any standing water around their homes.

Flashback Friday: Taste of the Caribbean Islands 2024
As we celebrate Caribbean American Heritage Month this June, this week’s Flashback Friday takes us back to the Taste of the Caribbean Islands, an event I was proud to establish during my time serving the City of Miramar. What began as a vision to celebrate the cultures, traditions, music, and cuisine of our Caribbean community has grown into a beloved annual tradition that brings residents together from across Broward County. As the event returns on June 13, I am proud to see this celebration continue to honor Caribbean heritage and the lasting contributions of Caribbean Americans in our community.

I was honored to attend the 43rd International Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA) at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center, a premier event celebrating the global impact of reggae, dancehall, Afrobeat, and world music. The evening recognized outstanding artists and cultural leaders, including legendary reggae icon Burning Spear, who received the Lifetime & Master of World Music Award. Congratulations to all of the honorees and award recipients, including Vybz Kartel, whose remarkable achievements were recognized throughout the evening. Events like IRAWMA highlight the rich cultural diversity that strengthens South Florida and showcase the powerful influence of Caribbean and international music around the world.

Sheridan Street Bridge Public Information Meeting
District 7 staff attended the Sheridan Street Bridge Public Information Meeting to hear from residents and learn more about this important infrastructure project. The project will raise the Sheridan Street Bridge over Florida’s Turnpike by two feet to meet current clearance standards, helping improve safety and reduce the risk of future vehicle impacts. Residents had the opportunity to ask questions, review project details, and share feedback with the project team. I remain committed to keeping our community informed as this project moves forward.
