Cottage and Lodge updates

Our latest improvement projects at Longhouse Lodge, Cliffside, and Sunny Ridge are complete and ready for you to enjoy this summer. Reserve a few nights at Longhouse and see what’s new!

1993 Crew Returns!

In 2023, five members of the 1993 outside crew approached RDC’s General Manager, Natalie Ward, about having a 30th anniversary work weekend to help open Camp in May. She gave the ok, and the weekend was a success!

The work weekend has become a new tradition, and this May, 13 staff members from that era participated. Former housekeepers, office staff, and a Camp driver joined the outside crew in opening cottages, collecting sticks and fallen branches from winter storms, cleaning up job sites, and even docking!

Feeling nostalgic? Want to join the fun? Mark your calendar for next year and sign up with John McLeod at john@mcleod-architects.com. Participation is limited—don’t miss out!

Meet Willow: Your Guide to Kayaking Adventures at RDC

We’re welcoming Willow back for another fantastic summer as our outdoor guide! Many of you know Willow for her passion for kayaking and the outdoors. This season, she’ll be offering weekly kayak lessons for all skill levels, along with weekly guided sunset and full moon kayak tours — perfect opportunities to experience the magic of Squam Lake. She will be also leading half-day hikes on Fridays.

Whether you're a beginner looking to learn or a seasoned paddler hoping to join a special outing, Willow is here to make your RDC adventure unforgettable. Be sure to sign up on Sundays!

Main Entrance Makeover: Beauty Meets Sustainability

As part of our ongoing efforts to manage water runoff from Rattlesnake Mountain, our latest project focused on improving the main entrance. The goal was twofold: first, to slow and disperse the flow of water traveling from Pinehurst Road down to the entrance and ultimately into the lake, and second, to transform the area into a colorful, welcoming landscape that supports pollinators and retains moisture.

To achieve this, our dedicated Grounds and Gardens team used a sustainable gardening method known as hügelkultur—a permaculture technique that mimics natural nutrient cycles to build healthy, resilient soil. The result is a vibrant and functional entrance that also enhances the environment. Please let us know what you think when you arrive!

June Retreats have begun!

RDC is excited to once again host Design Assembly, a hands-on community-based architectural program created in 2012 by McLeod Architects. Over the course of just 8 days, 10 students will work alongside a builder and two architects—including John McLeod, a former RDC staff member and current guest and board member—to design, prefabricate, transport, and install a project. This is the third year RDC is hosting the group, who have previously completed two projects on our property. This summer, they will partner with the Squam Lakes Association to create a new structure for Moon Island. Learn more about the program at design-assembly.org.

This month Sacred Makers Soul Retreat also returns to RDC for their 5th session, led by Kiala and Damon Givehand. This inspiring gathering brings together mixed media and fiber arts enthusiasts for four days of creative workshops in stitching, bookmaking, paper dyeing, and more. Join makers from around the world annually for a life-affirming journey of art, connection, and community right here at RDC. Learn more at sacredmakerssoulretreat.com.

Squam Writes is back for its 9th annual writing retreat at RDC. This craft-focused weekend offers experienced writers dedicated writing time, a creative community, and guidance from industry pros. Enjoy peer critiques and meditations to boost creative flow. Learn more at squamwrites.com.
