On October 27th, the Raynham Park and Recreation Department held its third annual Trunk or Treat event at the Borden Colony Soccer Field parking lot. Everyone dressed up in Halloween costumes and decorated the trunks of their cars for a contest. The participants showed off their creativity with themes, such as the beach, a candy-inspired M&M trunk, and even a McDonalds drive-thru!
It was a tight competition, but the top three winners for the Best Trucks of 2023 were crowned! The Raynham Fire Department came in third place, Mermaids came in second, and the first place winner was Under the Sea!

Historical Tidbit: Lillie B. Merrill House
|
Lillie B. Merrill House was built in 1780 and one of its early residents was Josiah Dean. Dean played a notable role in Massachusetts history through his work in manufacturing. Along with starting a nail works and rolling mill, Dean manufactured copper bolts that were used for the first military vessels of the U.S. Navy. The bolts were also the first to be made in southeastern Massachusetts.
The house's namesake came along later. Lillie B. Merrill, known as “Raynham’s Gracious Lady.” moved into the house in 1925 with her husband and two children. Merrill served the offices of the Town Clerk and Town Treasurer from 1928-1966. Additionally, she was the Town Accountant and Treasurer. The town office building was not built until 1951, so much of Merrill’s work was done in her home. Well-known and well-liked throughout Raynham, this historic house and an elementary school were named after Lillie B. Merrill.
Additionally, the features of Lillie B. Merrill house reveal the structure’s rich history. This house is part of a neighborhood of homes that were constructed for employees of the nation’s first successful iron forge. Other details that reveal the home’s 18th century construction include handmade nails in the fireplace, blown glass windows, and beams sealed with horse hair plaster. As evident through the home’s past residents and historical features, Lillie B. Merrill House holds the stories of old Raynham.

Climate Can Do: Updating Massachusetts'
Bottle Bill
for a Greener Future
In 1983, Massachusetts launched the Bottle Bill, encouraging recycling with a $0.05 deposit on soda and beer containers. It worked well, cutting litter and boosting aluminum, plastic, and glass recycling. But times have changed, and this old bottle bill needs a modern makeover.
Two new bills, H.3676 and H.3690/SB2104, now before the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy, aim to refresh the Massachusetts Bottle Bill, addressing the challenges posed by today's beverage consumption habits and recycling issues.
The Proposed Expansion
Bill H.3676: An Act to Update the Bottle Bill Presented by Representative Michelle L. Ciccolo of Lexington, this bill seeks to modernize the Bottle Bill to meet current needs.
Bill H.3690/SB2104: An Act to Expand the Bottle Bill Presented by Representative Marjorie C. Decker of Cambridge, this bill aims to broaden the Bottle Bill's coverage to include any drinkable liquid intended for human consumption.
Why the Expansion Matters
Expanding the Bottle Bill aligns with today's beverage choices. The original law covered soft drinks, mineral water, beer, and malt beverages. Today, our drinking options include bottled water, flavored waters, coffee-based drinks, juices, and sports drinks, which the outdated bill doesn't include. This gap has led to more litter and waste.
Updating the definition of "beverages" in the Bottle Bill will include water, flavored waters, iced teas, coffee-based drinks, and sports drinks. This expansion is expected to generate about $20 million in new revenue, with $5 million going to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA). EEA will use these funds initiatives, such as municipal recycling, recycling transfer stations, source reduction, and public education.
How To Support The Bottle Bill Expansion
To support the expansion of the Bottle Bill, contact your elected officials and let them know you want to see Massachusetts' Bottle Bill improved by House Bill 3676 and House Bill 3690/SB2104. The Conservation Law Foundation has made it easy to reach out with a prewritten letter available for the public’s use here.
Your actions can help Massachusetts move towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Raynham Giants Youth Football Teams
Take Home the Big Win!
The Raynham Giants Youth Football B-R Classic was fantastic! The Giants A/Midgets pulled off a fabulous 20-12 win. Coach Ryan recognized all the players for their hard work, "Couldn’t be more proud of the effort of both Raynham and Bridgewater players in this game. This was as good a youth football game as you’ll ever get to watch. The toughness, the fight, the sportsmanship. This Bridgewater-Raynham youth football rivalry is so very special and the B-R Classic is the best game around. Congrats to Gabe O’Campo for winning the Creamo Cup MVP! Congrats to all 8th graders for earning a win tonight in their final 'Classic.' Next year, many of these boys from tonight’s game will go on to become classmates, friends and teammates. That’s pretty cool." The Giants B/Peewes also had a great game and the Mighty Mites won 6-0. Congratulations to the youth football teams, their families, and supporters! Go Giants!
