AI Assist

I've been getting a lot of messages from companies asking to be included in the BioPharmGuy directory. I have always get them, but this was more than usual, and it's been going on for a couple months. Plus they were often formatted nicely including the information I need, which is not normal.

So, finally I asked someone what prompted them to ask for inclusion.

They said they had asked AI how to get more web traffic from AI query results and one of the main suggestions was to get listed at BioPharmGuy.

Wow, I guess AI is smarter than I thought! Finally doing some good in the world.

Industry

Toast 'Em

First things first. We discovered a company working on small molecules for oncology who named themselves SciBrunch and it about set us off.

SciBrunch? Really?

What an astonishingly bad one. Named after a meal!

Maybe next time someone will name their company after an emotion.

Perhaps we will soon be graced with a presence of BioSadness, which incidentally was also the summary of BioPharmGuy's last conference experience.

Long Time Not Seen

Two years ago, there was a conference so amazing, Interplay Bio was counting down the days.

That countdown expired October 28, 2024, but it's still the top news for the company, leaving us to ask what the hell happened on Halloween 2024 in Boston??

Optical Pipeline

The most common theme of drug company pipeline pages is a list of potential products with arrows or lines stretching distances that match clinical trial stages. The longer the line, the further along.

This is exceptionally easy to follow which is probably why some companies just have to get cute.

And cute is one thing.

Ringing an eyeball with your products is just weird.

Insera Therapeutics

Insera's website is copyright 2012, which is generally a sign a company is defunct, and their zombie website was forgotten by an old webhost.

Yet defying this logic, Insera is very much an active company. In fact, this week they announced one of their devices had been cleared by FDA.

Can't always judge a biotech company by its website. Or a biotech data provider.

Suddenly Sober

Big pharma has massively helped people on their weight loss journeys. Now it's time to sober these people up, if Goa Therapeutics' plan is achieved.

The sober pill is not exactly what you might think. It's more of a convenience for people who want to remove the effects of alcohol, not for people who want to avoid drinking. (GLPs are helping with that anyways)

This is one of those things that sounds like a good idea until you consider it would make every moment a drinkable moment instead of the times with no responsibility.

If you could sober up quickly, what's keeping you from getting toasty before surgery? Pop the pill 20 minutes before, scrub in and you're good to go just as the scalpel hits flesh!

Goa is located in that scientific hotbed of West Palm Beach, FL so you know it is definitely a promising idea.

Though, it is a little strange for a drug company, who is at best years away from product approval, to have a VP of Marketing on staff. And wouldn't you know, they had already filed for an IPO prior to announcing their existence to the world.

But of course this isn’t another Florida grift. No way!

Health & Science

Reproducibility Crisis

We haven’t seen many great scientific ideas emerge from the current government in the US, but this one has potential. The latest idea is to investigate reproducibility of biomedical research.

It’s an open secret that a large portion of published results are the result of data cherry-picking and goalpost moving, with a dose of outright fraud.

With no private sector or academic incentive to bother doing any double-checking, it's a market failure that wastes taxpayer money and leads to more garbage science, which is exactly the kind of thing governments should be focused on, so let it rip.

Promise Broken

Not sure how we missed it but Colossal was back in the news a few weeks back.

After originally promising a baby Woolly Mammoth by 2025, the company now says it will be at least another 5 years.

How dare they.

They have enlisted AI to fix their problems. Sure, the problem was data analysis, not the primitive state of artificial gestation.

Can’t wait to read the article in 2030 where they promise one by 2040.

Just a reminder, once upon a time back in 2017 they said it would be two years, even though elephant gestation is 22 months. At least the promises get less outlandish as time goes on.

Promise Kept

AI promises are a dime a dozen. You may have heard people suggest it will somehow create a more efficient healthcare system in America.

What if we told you it has already happened?

That's right, hospital system have figured out how to more efficiently extract revenue from us all, to the tune of a billion dollars. Just as should have been predicted.

Did you really think revenue-maximizing companies would do anything else?

Neck Laced

Many strange things happen to animals in the name of scientific progress. Monkeys smoke cigarettes. Bats walk on a treadmill.

And now mice have a second heart surgically implanted in their necks.

This study was part of an effort to see how young organs age in older recipients.

Result was young organs quickly "age" to appear roughly the same as pre-existing organs meaning young organs aren't a fountain of youth when you stick them into a decrepit old bag of bones

So, any fantasy of harvesting organs to help billionaires live forever is sadly not going to work.

Not that they won't try.

All Boxes Ticked

Quest Diagnostics runs lots of tests. Some of them involve suspected Lyme disease amongst people who have tick encounters.

Quest released a study last week showing a third of patients who have antibodies for Lyme-causing bacteria also show antibodies against one or more additional tick-borne pathogens.

Head out to the field and collect 'em all!

Choice is Bananas

Gene edited bananas that do not turn brown could be for sale in the UK soon.

Wow, great that they made sure we aren't wasting THE CHEAPEST FRUIT.

How about they figure out raspberries? Those bastards last six hours after you get them home.
