California accounts for about a third of the nation’s homeless people, and among this population, seniors are estimated to be the fastest-growing group. California’s overall senior homeless people grew 7% from 2017 to 2121. This concerning trend is not unique to a single region, as it is happening across the country.
Our case managers have observed a significant increase in older adults reaching out for assistance. Senior citizens face a higher risk of homelessness due to various factors. They are more vulnerable to health issues, including diseases, mental health disorders, physical injuries, and disabilities. They often rely on a fixed income and may lack strong social connections or family support.
The rising cost of rent, real estate taxes, and medical insurance have forced many older adults out of their homes. As a result, they find themselves living in precarious situations such as cars, weekly motels, or even on the streets, where their safety is at great risk.
While we don't have all the solutions to this growing problem, we strive to assist pets that require veterinary care due to illness or injury belonging to those experiencing homelessness. We also provide pet food to those in need. By addressing these smaller yet significant challenges we aim to alleviate some of the burdens they face keeping pets and people together.
