ACE Mentor Program
By Erika Edomwonyi, AACC Student Member and Communications Liaison
One of the most rewarding parts of having a career—any career—but especially in the design and building industry, is when you can contribute your skills, expertise, and hard-earned wisdom to train up the next generation. ACE Mentor Program of America was founded on this principle through its unique, 16-week program connecting high school students with architecture, construction, and engineering professionals.
Each year, a select number of schools participate in the program, bringing real-world experts into the classroom to deliver hands-on experiences, visits to local construction sites, and guided instruction, all with the goal of supplying the next generation of professionals with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed.
Melanie Stern, owner of MKS Architecture, has served as a mentor for the past three years and says, “I’m invested in helping the future generations of our industry and want to help them make connections because ultimately, that’s what it’s all about.”
ACE has been a vital resource to help bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world by introducing students early on to the main concepts, challenges, and technical skills involved in the design and build professions all under the guidance of knowledgeable industry experts. The insights they gain will no doubt serve as invaluable as they enter the field.
For mentors, alike, the benefit of engaging with students will provide an opportunity for them to expand their networks, gain new perspectives, and strengthen their own knowledge of the field. “It’s amazing to connect with the students in a way that I wouldn’t have had I not been involved in the program,” says Debbie Chamberlain, ACE Affiliate Director, Annapolis.
The lasting impact of mentorship extends beyond the program. For some, the program is just the beginning of lifelong friendships, connections, and partnerships. Having a mentor—especially for those who don’t know anyone in the industry or don’t know where to start—can make all the difference in their career.
The ACE Mentor Program of Annapolis will begin its 2026/2027 program year on October 7. To learn more, or to sign up as a volunteer, please visit https://annapolisace.org/.
