Good afternoon,
Summer has a way of reminding us to play. The longer days, beach walks, backyard gatherings, and spontaneous adventures make it feel natural to laugh a little more and take life a little less seriously. But the truth is, play isn't just for summer—we need it all year long.
Earlier this week I was able to attend a Playmaker Academy booster workshop. A wonderful reminder of the power of play as we created games with assorted items, like bubbles, scarves and even a parachute.
Play is far more than fun. It's medicine for our minds and bodies. It helps ease caregiver and workplace burnout by giving our nervous systems a chance to rest, recharge, and experience joy. It can also support healing from trauma by creating moments of safety, connection, creativity, and freedom. When we play, we shift from simply surviving to truly living.
The beautiful thing is that play looks different for everyone. It might be cold water dipping, painting, gardening, dancing in your kitchen, hiking a favorite trail, or laughing with friends over coffee. There is no right way to play—only your way.
One of the reasons I return to the ocean again and again is because cold water dipping offers all of this. Yes, the cold has physical benefits, but it's the laughter, the community, and the shared experience that keep me coming back. For a few moments, no one is focused on their to-do list. We're simply present, connected, and fully alive.
As you soak up the joys of summer, take notice of what makes you feel playful. Then ask yourself how you can carry a little more of that into every season. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you.
Wishing you a week of play, light, love and laughter,
Lisa
