An Act of Love
The Rev. Mother Nina Bacas
| |
I heard Fr. Jacob’s sermon four times this past weekend. Each time, my favorite part was his comparing our stewardship pledges to a wedding registry. We give a wedding gift not out of obligation, but out of our love.
I heard this love as our stewardship captains spoke last weekend at each service. I heard of the specialness of our church, and how they want it to continue and grow—not only for themselves, but for future generations.
Thanks be to God, we are no longer in a postpandemic existential crisis—we are healthy and growing. But we do not have a large endowment to rest on. Every year, we must raise the funding to run the church. These funds come from you and from renting our spaces to outside groups. It’s as simple as that.
Our 2027 Stewardship campaign is off to a great start. Already, we have $182,400 in pledges. As your act of love for St. Bart’s, please prayerfully consider what you can pledge for 2027, and return your pledge card to our church office or submit your pledge online. We all thank you!

We’re looking for more volunteers to keep our food distribution running smoothly, especially as we head into the busy season ahead. Any questions? The Labyrinth: An Ancient Tradition
The labyrinth we are installing on the patio outside the chapel is part of a tradition, both sacred and secular, that goes back centuries. Labyrinths first appeared in Christian life in the 4th century CE in North Africa, and by the 12th century could be found in churches across Europe. In the 20th century the popularity of labyrinths revived, with thousands in churches and other contemplative spaces worldwide. Today, churches of various denominations encourage people to walk the labyrinth during Lent and Advent.

Thank You, Acolytes!
A heartfelt thanks to our youth who completed acolyte training on October 11! Members of this vital ministry participate with clergy and other lay ministers in worship services at St. Bart’s. They carry the cross, candles, and Gospel book in the procession, and also assist with setting the altar table and other liturgical duties during the services.

ST. BART’S MUSIC SERIES:
Brahms German Requiem
Sunday, November 1, 4 p.m., Sanctuary
Join director John-Luke Addison and the St. Bart’s Community Chorus on All Saints’ Day, November 1, for their performance of Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem). One of the great masterpieces of the choral repertoire, the requiem offers a message of comfort and hope to the living rather than mourning for the dead. Presented in Brahms’ own four-hand piano accompaniment, this intimate version preserves the work’s profound emotional depth and musical grandeur while allowing the text and choral writing to shine with remarkable clarity. Tickets $20 ($10 for students), available in advance at the St. Bart’s Music website.

Submit Names for the Necrology
Our Brahms Requiem concert will include a reading of the necrology in commemoration of All Souls’ Day. If you would like to submit any names of those who have passed away in the past year, please send them to John-Luke Addison by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 25.
Parishioners are also invited to bring photos or mementos of loved ones to place on the altar of remembrance in the narthex during services on All Souls’ weekend, October 31–November 1.

Come & Experience Cursillo!
February 18-21, 2027, Julian
Cursillo—meaning “a short course in Christianity”—began in post–Civil War Spain as a way to renew faith and Christian community. Since then, it has spread around the world, touching lives and strengthening the Church.
Cursillo candidates are invited to attend an all-expenses-paid weekend to learn about the Cursillo movement and, most importantly, experience the love, warmth, and welcome of the Cursillistas—people who have previously participated in Cursillo. Our next Cursillo weekend will be February 18-21, 2027. Come and discover how a weekend of faith, fellowship, and Christian love can make a difference in your spiritual journey!
Interested in learning more? Contact your parish representative, Christine Attoun.
