SAFETY MOMENT – Craig A. Shaffer, CSP – SafetyWorks, Inc.
TIME TO THINK ABOUT FROSTBITE & HYPOTHERMIA
For many across the country, winter weather is here. A few things to consider…
· Frostbite (frozen skin/tissue) and hypothermia (low core body temperature) are two injuries that can sneak up during outdoor work in cold weather. If the body is not protected, serious injury, amputation, or possibly even death could result.
· Exposed extremities (nose, ears, fingers, toes) are usually first to freeze during very cold or cold & windy/wet weather. This Wind Chill Chart from NOAA and the NWS shows just how quickly this can happen.
· Do your field personnel know about this chart? Do they know about gear that can provide effective protection from the cold – lined/waterproof gloves, hoods/balaclavas, hardhat liners, insulated/waterproof boots, heated jackets, etc.? Does your company invest in quality cold weather PPE? Many contractors who do will attest to it reducing their injury risks, and increasing worker satisfaction and productivity.
· During extreme wind chill conditions, and when clothing gets wet (rain, snow, sweat, etc.), evaporative cooling can quickly lower core body temperature to dangerous levels. Life-threatening hypothermia could result.
· Do your younger/newer employees know how to dress in loose layers? Do they wear moisture-wicking fabrics against their skin and wind-breaking/waterproof fabrics as an outer layer? Do they know to remove layers to manage/prevent sweating? Do they bring dry clothes to the site if they need to change out of wet clothing?
· Consider hydration, too – dehydration can happen as quickly in cold weather as it can during the summer. Is there water available on site & are your personnel drinking enough of it? Coffee and other caffeinated beverages are preferred drinks for many in construction, just make sure it supplements – and does not replace – water intake.
· Today, there’s a lot of attention being given to heat illness prevention. But don’t forget, extreme cold can be equally dangerous. Consider adding cold weather safety to your training regimen.
