Raynham Middle School Winter Concert
|
RMS middle school students assembled on December 19 for the RMS Winter Concert. The initial performance featured the Fifth and Sixth-grade Chorus, showcasing their rendition of "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" This piece, composed by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, served as a notable inclusion in the 2013 Disney 3D animated film Frozen.
|
|
On the video, you'll see an introduction from a chorus member:“We had a lot of fun learning this song and hope you have as much fun listening to it.”
The students also played more crowd favorites like “Jingle Bells” and “Enchanted Village,” composed by Sean O’Loughlin, which a chorus member said was her favorite piece ever performed because “there are many intriguing changes in this song related to tempo, volume, and melody. Enjoy!

It Came Upon The Midnight Clear
Edmund Sears (1810-1876), born and raised in Massachusetts, wrote a poem titled "It Came Upon The Midnight Clear" (better known as "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear") in 1849. He penned the words shortly after the Mexican-American War had ended (1846-1848). Although it was written in a time of social unrest, the poem describes a universal message of peace. In that same year, thousands of Americans were rushing to California in search of gold. Sears included three different references to gold in his poem: "harps of gold," "golden hours" and "Age of Gold". Was he inspired by the "forty-niners" or was it a coincidence?
Richard Storrs Willis (1819-1900), another Bostonian, composed a tune called "Study No. 23" in his Church Chorals and Choir Studies in 1850. Willis didn't know how his tune came to be used with "It Came Upon The Midnight Clear." A letter written by Willis simply states, "On my return from Europe [1876], I found that it [the tune] had been incorporated into various church collections apparently to Edmund Sears' text."
"It Came Upon The Midnight Clear" was one of the first Christmas carols to be written and composed by Americans - and it was done right here in Massachusetts!

Climate Can Do:
How to be Sustainable During the Holidays
While there is much to celebrate this time of year, it's important to remember that these times also generate more waste than usual. As we approach the holiday season, let’s take a moment to consider all the ways we can be more environmentally friendly.
Recycling Christmas Trees
If you are buying a real Christmas tree this year, please remove the tree of all decorations like tinsels, ornaments, metal rings and do not cover the tree in plastic bags when throwing them out. Some towns recycle natural Christmas trees into mulch that can be used for municipal landscaping projects. So please take a moment to clear your trees before tossing them out! Check the list below for recycling information specific to Raynham
- Residents can bring trees to the Raynham Transfer Station where it will be recycled w/ grass and leaves. Only available for Raynham residents, proof of residency is required.
Recycling Electronics
Did you received a new phone or tablet during the holidays? Consider recycling your old electronics instead of throwing it out. Any Staples store accept old electronics everyday. Check out the Staples website for the list of electronics they accept. Below are some Staples locations in the area:
- 600 S ST W, Raynham
- 500 Westgate Dr, Brockton
This Climate Can-Do Article was written by Queenie Chen, Tufts University BuzzAround Intern. BuzzAround focuses on actions we can do to live more sustainably. We can do it!
