What's Cooking at The Price Center (and at my house)

by Mike Markowitz, Dad of Sarah and member of The Price Center Board of Directors

A few noshes before the main course...

Teamwork makes the dream work and, as a result, we use the word "Teamwork" a lot around here. Unfortunately, like most words that get used a lot, over time it can start to feel like blah, blah.

So let me tell you what it actually looks like. Recently one of our individuals returned to their program after a few days away. Something was off. They weren't themselves — quieter, withdrawn, not the person we'd come to know. When we had a chance to talk, we learned they'd been to a funeral. They were grieving, and we didn't know.

We wish we had. Not because we could have prevented the grief — nobody can do that — but because we might have been better prepared to help when this person returned. A kind word at the door. A quieter morning. Someone ready to sit with them. Instead, we were catching up to something that had already happened.

Of course we know that death and funerals don't announce themselves. But vacations do. Camp does. Planned medical appointments and treatments do. And when we know in advance that your loved one will be away from their progra — even just a week's notice — it helps us in ways that go beyond the schedule. It lets us plan staffing, adjust activities, and make sure that when they walk back through our door, we're ready for them.

There's also a practical reality that's important to mention, not to guilt anyone, but because transparency is part of teamwork too: The Department of Developmental Services pays us based on attendance. A week's absence translates to roughly $1,000 in lost revenue — revenue that funds the programs and staff your family counts on. We're not saying don't take your loved one on vacation. Please do. Just loop us in when you can.

The same goes for anything that's affecting your loved one's life — a move, a medical issue, an emotional rough patch, a change at home. We're not asking to know everything. We're asking to know enough to help. That's what teams do.

The staff at The Price Center is really good at this work. We're even better at it when we do it together.

I'm at The Price Center regularly -- most Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings where I enjoy a fresh cup of coffee in The Kindness Café -- and I get to see our amazing team work with your loved ones. It is a real treat. Stop by and let me know your thoughts or better still, let me know when you're coming so I can make sure I'm there to greet you.

Please accept my invitation to come by The Kindness Café. The coffee's good and the atmosphere is even better.

What's Cooking at My House

Berry Crumble Overnight Oats

4 servings

Prep Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 8 hours

I love fruit. It'd be hard to pick just one kind to call my favorite, but blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are up near the top of the list. So this mixed berry crumble is delicious AND easy. My only problem is waiting till morning to eat it!

Ingredients:

for the Oats:

  • 1-½ cups mixed berries
  • 2 tsp chia seeds plus 1 tbsp/divided
  • ¾ tsp light brown sugar plus 1 tbsp/divided
  • 2 tsps lemon juice
  • 1-½ tsp ground cinnamon, divided
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2-¼ cups milk
  • 2 cups old fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup reduced fat, plain yoghurt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

for the Crumble topping

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp light brown sugar
  • 1-½ tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ⅛ tsp salt

Directions

  • Combine frozen berries, chia seeds, ¾ tsp brown sugar, lemon juice and ¼ tsp each of cinnamon and salt in a medium saucepan.
  • Cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until most berries have burst, about 6 minutes. Set aside to cool, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl; refrigerate, covered.
  • Stir milk, oats, yoghurt, vanilla, and 1 tbsp each of chia seeds, and brown sugar in medium bowl till combined. Cover and refrigerate 8 hours.
  • Prepare Crumble topping: Preheat oven to 350 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, combine Crumble ingredients and stir till mixture holds it shape when squeezed together. Spread evenly on prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake till fragrant and lightly toasted, 5-7 minutes. Cool completely, Transfer to airtight container.
  • In the morning, spoon ½ cup of oat mixture and top with 3 tbsp of the berry mixture. Then, top berries with another ½ cup of oats. Finally sprinkle 2 tbsp of the crumble before serving.

Enjoy!

Kindness Cafe Update

The Kindness Café is a donation based Coffee Shop and Training Center that is open only to friends, family, staff, and invited guests on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30a to noon. We serve pastries and beverages. Come! Have a coffee, tea, or hot chocolate!

Donations are gratefully accepted to support:

  • Hands-on barista training and job coaching
  • Skill development in customer service, teamwork, and workplace readiness
  • Pathways to competitive, integrated employment beyond The Price Center
  • A culture of inclusion where individuals are seen for their abilities, not their limitations

Did You Know?

  • Individuals with intellectual
and developmental disabilities (IDDs) experience grief just
as deeply as anyone else, but may express it differently. Behavioral changes, withdrawal, or physical complaints are common. Recognizing grief in non-verbal or differently communicative individuals is an important skill for caregivers and program staff alike.
  • Massachusetts is one of a small number of states that funds day programs for adults with IDDs through a fee-for-service model, meaning providers like The Price Center are paid based on the days individuals actually attend their programs.
  • Caregivers of individuals with IDDs report significantly higher rates of stress and burnout than the general population. Respite care — temporary relief for primary caregivers — is available through several Massachusetts programs, including those administered through DDS, and can make a meaningful difference in long-term caregiver health.
