Every week animal sheltering brings its own challenges, some weeks more than others. There are always more animals than resources, temporary fosters or homes to adopt them. Add on more mouths to feed and medical needs to treat can be an overwhelming proposition.
When natural disasters come, it multiplies these challenges exponentially for the shelters we work with, and are here to help. Not only are shelters responsible for the animals in their care during a natural disaster but also must be prepared for the influx of both stray and owned animals living in flood areas, unable to evacuate with their owners.
Saving Grace is a critical partner for shelters in Southeastern NC and even though we are already full with a population who needs us, we really show up during times like this as Debby rolls in. The level to which we show up for the dogs in need is directly linked to the support we receive from our community.
Ways you can help:
-
DONATE - Make a financial donation to support medical care for incoming dogs. Most have had no veterinary care and will need vaccines, spay/neuter, heart-worm tests and treatment for those who are positive, and treatment for any additional medical needs.
-
FOOD - We are very low on food and any donations would be greatly appreciated, click here.
As I have seen the Joy of Adoption Stories, I recognize some I met as they boarded the Saving Grace van in the midst of a disaster and it is rewarding to know they landed not only in a safe place that day, but a home forever.
