Dear Neighbors,

I hope your fall season has been off to an enjoyable start!

It's been a busy month downtown. Budget season is in full swing. On Friday, City Council sent Mayor Mike Johnston 22 recommendations to his proposed 2025 budget. You can read the letter here: Bit.ly/2025BudgetRecommendations

I want to thank all the volunteers who attended my office's fall Community Clean-up Day last weekend. It was a huge success!

There's another opportunity for you to share feedback as well - our annual District 5 Resident Survey is out! Each year, my office sends out a survey to the residents of District 5. You should have received a postcard with this information in early September. Please take the survey at Bit.ly/2024D5Survey. The results will guide my office's work plan over the next year, so it's important to make your voice heard!

Stay tuned for more important updates, and don't forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest news. And as always, please don't hesitate to reach out to our office if there is anything we can do to assist you.

Gratefully,

Councilwoman, Amanda Sawyer

District 5

Take Our Annual Constituent Feedback Survey

Each fall, my office mails a survey to District 5 residents requesting your feedback to ensure that I am addressing the issues of concern in our neighborhoods. By comparing new data to responses we’ve received over the past several years, this feedback helps us track trends in community sentiment which is valuable information for my staff and I as we create our annual District 5 work plan. This feedback also dictates how we advocate for budget and projects within Council District 5 the following year.

2023-24 survey results showed that your top three concerns were crime, traffic and affordable housing. Here are a few of the initiatives we worked on in 2023-2024 in response to District 5 resident feedback:

  • Beautified District 5 neighborhoods by hosting three volunteering initiatives that cleaned city-owned parks and open spaces and re-painted over 30 bus stop benches.
  • Created "District 5 Projects Night" to connect District 5 residents with over 20 city agencies and community partners.
  • Funded a traffic study of Exposition Avenue between Quebec Street and Leetsdale Drive, including the Monaco Parkway triangle intersection to design traffic calming measures for the City to install.
  • Implemented the Near Southeast Area Plan through a legislative rezoning to direct future development along the Leetsdale corridor and to protect naturally occurring affordable housing in our neighborhoods.
  • Partnered with data analysts from the Denver Police Department to overlay crime heat maps with street lighting to identify gaps and request additional lighting where it could be helpful in deterring crime.
  • Sponsored a legislative rezoning of the Hale statistical neighborhood to allow for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).

Now it's time to share your priorities for 2024-2025! You should receive a postcard in late August or early September with a QR code linking to the annual survey. In case you missed it, you can access the survey at https://bit.ly/2024D5Survey or by holding the camera of your phone over the QR code below, which will take you to the survey. Please fill out our Constituent Feedback Survey by Dec. 31st, 2024. Thank you for your engagement and partnership as my office works to address issues of concern in our community!

Take the survey!

George Washington High School Food Pantry Needs Your Donations

George Washington High School operates an on-site food bank to provide fresh food, staples, and toiletries to families and staff in need. Over the past year, they have seen a 400% increase in the pantry.

There are three ways to donate:

  • Cash or check dropped off in the front office made out to Patriots Care, Inc.
  • Zelle to GWHS.Food.Pantry@gmail.com (put Food Pantry in the memo)
  • Venmo to @GWPC-Be-Inspired (put Food Pantry in the memo)

They are also looking for volunteers to help on a weekly basis to cover a range of tasks. If you have time to give, you can sign up at: Patriots Care: George Washington High School Food Pantry (signupgenius.com).

Museum of Denver

Exciting things are happening! You may have seen recent stories in the news about Mayor Johnston wanting to have a Denver history museum on the second floor of the McNichols building. As you know, the Museum of Denver (MOD) is very interested in occupying part of the McNichols building. They have submitted information to the city in the hope that the MOD will be selected, and the District 5 Council Office has provided a letter of support. We will know more later this summer and will keep you updated.

Here's what you can do to help:

  • Help raise awareness and encourage people to engage with the MOD:
  • Are you a Blue Bear or a Blue Horse Denverite? Take the Blue Bear vs Blue Horse poll at the bottom of our homepage and ask your friends to take it too!
  • Follow the Museum of Denver - and ask your friends to follow - (@museumofdenver) and on Facebook
  • Donate to the Museum of Denver. They need to raise money in order to hire staff and create exhibits.
  • Volunteer to help spread the word, fundraise, and more

Mission: The Museum of Denver will gather, protect, honor and share the stories from yesterday and today that shape our city.

Vision: The Museum of Denver is an educational asset that enriches our community by informing and inspiring visitors of all ages to imagine and create Denver’s future.

Additionally, the Museum of Denver team is partnering with the state’s America 250 - Colorado 150 Commission to host two public meetings where community members can talk about how they’d like to commemorate and/or celebrate our state’s “Sesquisemiquincentennial” - the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 150th anniversary of Colorado becoming a state. Schlessman Public Library Needs Your Help!

One of DPL's most popular branch libraries is in need of renovations! Though the renovation was initially funded in 2017 through a city bond, increased construction and labor costs and inflation require additional funding to complete the project.

The renovations will include an improved community room on the first level, a brand-new teen space, a larger children's library, and enhancements throughout the library that make spaces easier to access and use. To find more information visit dplfriends.org/schlessman.

Ellsworth Ave. Storm System Phase 2 Status Update

Phase 1 of the Ellsworth Storm project is complete. The project began in August

2021 at the intersection of Steele St and Ellsworth Ave. This work required

extensive relocation of underground utilities. Major work was performed in the

Ellsworth corridor to update and replace the storm sewer lines that flow down

Ellsworth Ave and connect to Steele St. Green Infrastructure planters were

placed on all corners of the Adams St and Ellsworth Ave intersection and the NE

corner of the Cook St and Ellsworth Ave intersection. Phase 1 ended just west of

Madison St on Ellsworth Ave.

The Phase 2 construction contract was approved by City Council in September, and the project is set to begin this month!

Phase 2

The work on Phase 2 is similar to Phase 1 however there will be no planters or

bulb outs. Ellsworth will be regraded to eliminate flat areas that currently

experience ponding and icing. Additionally, underground storage and multiple

inlets will be added throughout Ellsworth Ave to intercept some of the flow.

Denver Water East Colfax Pipe Replacement Project

Next week, the crew will work on the following segment of East Colfax Avenue:

  • Clermont Street to Dexter Street.

The typical work schedule on the project will continue to be Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Weekend work may be required throughout the project.

Project details

Denver Water will replace nearly 5 miles of aging pipe along East Colfax Avenue, between Broadway and Yosemite Street, working in two- to three-block segments at a time. The entire project should be complete by the end of 2024.

Local access to residences and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.

Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather and may be altered to accommodate major events in Denver. Commuters should expect delays in this area. For more information or to sign up to receive updates, we encourage folks to visit denverwater.org/Colfax. Denver Water and RTD are coordinating to minimize impacts to bus routes throughout the project. For more information about bus routes, visit RTD Service Alerts.

The pipe replacement work is taking place in advance of the upcoming East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit project, which is being led by the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, in partnership with RTD, Colorado Department of Transportation, the Federal Transit Authority and the City of Aurora.

Quebec Street Sidewalk Gap Construction has Started!

Construction on the Quebec Street Sidewalk Gap project has begun. This work is expected to take 12 months to complete. The sidewalk gap construction program is about to start notifying constituents residing on either side of Quebec Street between 12th Ave and Montview Blvd of the upcoming construction.

Please visit the project website for more information. Please note that only the Quebec sidewalks are being constructed at this time (not 17th Ave).

Constituents affected should have received a notice on their door with an overview of the project along with a construction design map to show exactly where the sidewalk will go in the right of way adjacent to their property. Constituents will be able to see if a tree or fence in the city right of way needs to be removed, and if a driveway or curb cut needs to be reconstructed. Only select trees in the direct path of construction will be removed, with most trees being retained and protected during construction.

Kearney / Krameria Bikeway Construction Begins Soon

Later this fall, a new bike lane is set to be installed along the Kearney/ Krameria corridor, making it the longest continuous North/ South bike connection on Denver’s streets. The entire Kearney/Krameria neighborhood bikeway is 9.6 miles long, from E Smith Rd to E Virginia Ave.

This project is being built to reflect your community's feedback over the last 3 years, as part of Community Transportation Networks – a program aimed at rapidly expanding safe and comfortable transportation options within three areas of Denver. You can find more information the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure's (DOTI) website.

Colorado Boulevard Study

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in collaboration with the Regional Transportation District, the City and County of Denver, Arapahoe County, and the City of Glendale, is working to deliver Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on Colorado Boulevard. The primary project area is on Colorado Boulevard from I-70 to Evans Avenue.

BRT provides high-quality transit service by combining the capacity and efficiency of light rail with the flexibility, cost and simplicity of bus service. The Colorado BRT project will build upon the results of the Colorado Boulevard Corridor Plan.

Colorado Boulevard is a state highway and commercial corridor connecting people to jobs, schools, health care, shopping, restaurants, recreational destinations, and many other key destinations. Colorado Boulevard is the only major arterial on the city's east side that moves people between the northern and southern boundaries of Denver and connects to Glendale. It is a backbone of activity for both Denver and Glendale, but can be a difficult street to travel by any means other

than a car.

Denver's LeafDrop Program has Returned!

Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is kicking off its annual LeafDrop program, allowing residents an opportunity to drop off their leaves and pumpkins to have them turned into compost, rather than ending up in the landfill. Compost is a beneficial soil amendment used in gardens and landscapes that’s sold at most garden and hardware stores.

Through November 30, the following LeafDrop locations are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m:

  • Cherry Creek Transfer Station – 7301 E. Jewell Ave. (enter on E. Jewell Ave.)
  • Havana Nursery – 10450 Smith Rd. (enter on Smith Road)
  • Central Platte Campus – 1271 W. Bayaud Ave. (Enter through the gates at Bayaud and Navajo, go past the Denver Animal Shelter to dumpsters in front of Building 2 on the right.)

Note that the Cherry Creek Transfer Station is the only site that accepts loose leaves and hitched trailers (6 ft in length or less); otherwise, leaves should be bagged. Residents can download a coupon to receive a free five-pack of compostable paper leaf bags at participating Ace Hardware stores while supplies last. Leaves dropped off in plastic bags must be emptied on site.

Also, we’re just a few weeks away from opening our weekend drop sites! On Saturdays and Sundays from November 2 to November 17, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Denver residents can drop off their leaves and pumpkins at the following locations:

  • Cherry Creek Transfer Station – 7301 E. Jewell Ave. (enter on E. Jewell Ave.)
  • Bruce Randolph High School – E. 40th Ave. and Steele St.
  • Kennedy High School – Newland St. and Brown Pl.
  • Sloan’s Lake Northwest Parking Lot – W. Byron Pl. and Yates St.
  • Veterans Park – S. Vine St. and E. Iowa Ave.

Here are some other tips:

  • Refrain from including branches or other materials in your leaf bags
  • Don’t use twine or staples to secure paper leaf bags, just roll and crimp
  • Never rake or blow leaves into the streets; they can clog our storm sewer inlets and street sweepers.
  • If you are a current city compost customer, you can put leaves and pumpkins in your compost cart!

The District Attorney's October Scam Spotter

Bitcoin Scams are Surging

We’ve heard of fraudsters who call victims warning about some “suspicious activity’ on an account and ask for payment in the form of gift cards to remedy the situation. Now that most people are aware that the IRS or utility companies don’t take payment in the form of gift cards, they are more savvy to this scam. But now scammers have turned Bitcoin.

Denver is a unique city in promoting greater citizen involvement through organized neighborhood associations. Currently, there are 78 statistical neighborhoods represented by more than 200 registered neighborhood organizations (RNOs), Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and Homeowner Associations (HOAs).

In its defined geographic area, an RNO will normally address neighborhood quality of life issues - such as traffic, development and zoning, crime, communication and licensing, and promote social activities to enhance residential spirit, developing a sense of community, and encourage resident participation. RNOs meet regularly and many send out newsletters to keep residents informed on neighborhood issues and events.

Get more involved in your community by joining your Registered Neighborhood Organization (RNO). Below is a list of Council District 5 community organizations. You can also find out which RNO you belong to by entering your address or selecting a location on the map.
