Over the past few weeks, I’ve been overjoyed at the bookends of our church experience for children and youth. We really do value the interconnectedness that we all share, and that has been evident in the ways we raise our children and youth together. The last Sunday in May, our Children’s Sunday class had the chance to throw an appreciation breakfast for their teachers. Each of them was fantastic! Our Pre-K through 5th graders came prepared to serve with aprons and notepads as they took orders and delivered food and refreshments with seriousness and excitement, making sure they were able to serve the teachers with the same energy and preparation that they had been greeted and welcomed with all year.

This past Sunday, we celebrated our graduates on all their accomplishments and joined them in the excitement and the nerves that come from a wide-open future. It has been a journey for this class; they are a group that was learning how to really trust and invest in deeper relationships in the middle of a global pandemic where every part of their formative years felt so unstable. This is one of the few groups of teenagers who can name a difference in the world before and after COVID, but they weathered the storms and came out strong on the other side. So, we celebrate with Carrington, Jacob, Carter, Clara, Sophia, Bruce, and Kathryn for all they’ve done, for all they are, and for all they’ll still discover about themselves and the world.

Over the weeks, as I scoured pictures of the first 18 years of their lives and as I looked at each of them Sunday morning, I was reminded that not a one of our students arrived where they are alone. Baccalaureate Sunday is a reminder for me that it isn’t just their parents, their friends, or their teachers, but each and every individual who comes in and out of their lives through the church who has a hand in forming them into the great adults they are. Raising kids is not an easy thing. I, for one, am constantly wondering how much I am getting wrong or if I’m just providing them with ammo for their future therapist with all I don’t know, and so on Sundays like these, I welcome the reminders that I am not alone, I don’t have to have all the answers, and because of the wealth of loving people invested in the growth of our children together, the kids will be all right.

Let us take some time as we enter into a summer break to reflect on the gratefulness we have for all those other parents along the way who helped us grow into who we are today. Let’s also thank all of our Sunday School teachers, and shameless plug, I’d love to have you join our growing team if you suddenly have an urge to plug into our children and youth this fall 😉! - Caleb

Arts+ Returns to PRBC for Summer Camps and Music Programs

Long-standing partnerships help to make PRBC an awesome community campus. We are happy to welcome Arts+ back for another season of engaging and educational summer camps. In July and August, they will host two weeks of Discovering Music & Art (K–2nd grade) and one week each of Charlotte Youth Choir Camp (2nd–6th grade) and Exploring Ukulele (3rd–6th grade). Camps will take place in the Youth Building, the Choir Room, and the Sanctuary, with Friday performances and showcases in Milford Chapel and the Community Center.

Arts+ is also on our campus year-round, offering private violin lessons and seasonal Carolina Suzuki Strings recitals (violin, viola, cello, and harp). You can learn more about Arts+ at their home page (https://www.artsplus.org/).
