Also known as the Rose City, the prehistoric city of Petra

is an incredible spectacle that one must see to believe.

Its architecture, which is carved into the red sandstone cliffs,

has helped make it one of the New 7 Wonders of the World!

Located in the desert canyons of southwestern Jordan, 

Petra was the capital of the ancient Nabataean civilization.

Stretching over 102 square miles, Petra is an incredible site 

that usually attracts one million tourists a year. 

You may be familiar with Petra thanks to its role in movies.

Films like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,

The Mummy Returns, and Aladdin have all used

its unique archaeology as a backdrop,

especially Al Khazneh or The Treasury.

Carved into the face of red sandstone rock, it rises up 127 ft high and is nearly 82 ft wide.

Though it's called the Treasury, the structure is actually a tomb.

Given its prominent location, archaeologists are almost certain

that it was the tomb for a Nabataean king or queen. 

So if Al Khazneh is a tomb, why do people call it the Treasury? 

This stems from the early 20th century when Bedouins became convinced

that the urn on the second story contained the treasure of an Egyptian Pharoah. 

In fact, they were so sure that they continuously shot at it hoping to release the treasure. 

After that, the name stuck. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, 

Al Khazneh is used as the location of the Holy Grail, one of the world's ultimate treasures.

Today, millions flock to drink in the majestic architecture of Petra and marvel at the prehistoric society that left behind such a big impression!

Then we're off for an afternoon of exploration with my longtime friend Edward,

a Druid, Poet and Author who lives in the area.

one of the finest full-court tombs in the country. 

A complex multi-epoch and multi-purpose structure,

with its earliest parts dating from the Late Neolithic (c. 2500 BCE).

I'll lead a Group Meditation and Edward will share the Irish legend

of Diarmuid and Grainne with us.

GLEANCAR WATERFALL, at 50 ft.

though not the largest waterfall in Ireland, is one of the most beautiful!

Glencar Waterfall was the inspiration for W.B. Yeats' 1889 poem, "The Stolen Child," which uses the waterfall's landscape as the setting for a supernatural invitation

from fairies luring a child away from the human world into their mystical realm.  

Edward will share a short poetry reading of this famous poem with us.

CARROWMORE MEGALITHIC CEMETARY,

Ireland’s oldest megalithic tombs set in a dramatic neolithic landscape.

NEWGRANGE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE

Newgrange, a Stone Age or Neolithic era (around 3200 BCE) monument

in the Boyne Valley, which is the jewel in the crown of Ireland's Ancient East.

Knowth is another Neolithic era large passage tomb surrounded by 17 smaller tombs.

A FULL DAY in KILDARE!

Sean P. McCabe will be joining us today to share information

about the pagan Goddess Bridget, as well as Celtic Spirituality in general.

Solas Bride Center and the Sisters of Bridget,

a small Christian Center for Celtic Spirituality in the spirit of Brigid of Kildare

Cathedral Church of St. Brigid,

originally a Christian church onsite from the end of the 5th century 

and replaced today by a a restored Norman cathedral dating from 1223 CE,

both on the site of a pagan shrine to the goddess Brigid.

Inside the church we find a Sheela-na-gig carving,

an ancient symbol of woman's freedom and creativity. 

St. Brigid's Fire Temple, dedicated to the most significant woman

of early Christian Ireland, or perhaps her pagan namesake.

Kildare Round Tower, dates to the 12th century.

At over 100 ft. tall, it's the second highest in Ireland, 

and the highest one that can be climbed inside.

Bridget’s Well, a mystical place of veneration for this pagan goddess.
