Urban League of San Diego County

As we move further into 2026, we are reminded that progress is not measured solely by economic indicators but also by how we care for one another as a community.

Across San Diego County, families are navigating a complex economic landscape—rising costs of living, shifting job markets, and the ongoing challenge of building generational stability. These realities are felt differently across cultures, income levels, and generations. For some, it is about preserving wealth; for others, it is about creating opportunity where none existed before. At the Urban League of San Diego County, we firmly believe that economic mobility must be inclusive, accessible, and sustainable for all.

Navigating Today’s Economy—Together

In times like these, there are a few guiding principles we can all embrace:

  • Invest in knowledge: Financial literacy is not optional—it is essential. Whether you are a young adult opening your first bank account, a parent preparing for college expenses, or a senior protecting retirement income, understanding how money works is key to long-term stability.
  • Leverage community resources: From workforce development programs to housing counseling and small business support, there are resources available—right here in our region—that can help families stay afloat and move forward.
  • Think long-term, act daily: Small, consistent actions—saving, budgeting, upskilling—create the foundation for generational change.

But beyond economics, we must also address something deeper: the health of our community itself.

A Call for Unity and Accountability

Recently, our region was shaken by a troubling incident involving youth in Carlsbad, where a young Black girl was subjected to racial slurs and physical aggression by her peers. This incident, now under investigation by local authorities and school officials, has sparked outrage and reflection across San Diego County.

Let us be clear—this is not just a moment of concern; it is a moment of responsibility.

What we witnessed was not only an act of harm but also a reflection of the work that remains to be done in shaping the values of our next generation. The Urban League has long believed that equity is not taught in words alone—it is modeled in our homes, reinforced in our schools, and upheld in our communities.

We must ask ourselves:

  • What are we teaching our children about respect, dignity, and inclusion?
  • How are we creating environments where every young person feels safe, seen, and valued?
  • And how do we respond—not just with outrage—but with action?

Civic Engagement as a Path Forward

Now more than ever, civic engagement is essential. This means:

  • Showing up to school board meetings and community forums
  • Advocating for policies that protect and uplift vulnerable populations
  • Supporting organizations and programs that invest in youth development and equity

Silence is not neutrality—it is permission. And together, we must choose something better.

Building the Future We Deserve

Despite the challenges we face, I remain hopeful. Every day, I see the power of this community—neighbors helping neighbors, young people stepping into leadership, and families working tirelessly to build brighter futures.

The Urban League of San Diego County will continue to be a bridge—connecting people to opportunity, advocating for justice, and fostering unity across every corner of our region.

Let this moment strengthen our resolve:

  • To lead with compassion.
  • To act with purpose.
  • And to build a San Diego where opportunity and respect are not privileges—but guarantees.

Health and Wellness Directory

We want to help you with tools to "Thrive in 2026"!

Do you have a business that provides health and wellness for individuals and families in the County of San Diego, Orange County, or the Inland Empire?

We are creating a Health & Wellness Directory housed on the Urban League of San Diego County website. This will include a behavioral health directory and a general health and wellness directory. According to the attendees of our Fireside Chats, areas in our communities lack health resources and need more urgent care facilities, especially ones open after 5 p.m. Our young families need a directory and a resource toolkit that includes accepted insurance information and medical professionals with cultural sensitivity training for diverse community members. This will be an online business list versus a case management site. Individuals will be directed to contact hotlines if they need to speak to a live person or need case management services.

This can be mental health, medical health, doula professional health, promotoras/ community health worker, physical health, fitness, or nutritional health businesses. This can be small, extensive, private practice, or consulting businesses.
