NATIONAL PICKLEBALL DAY
Today is August 8 and National Pickleball Day on the National Day Calendar to celebrate a popular paddle sport that continues to gain popularity. In the spirit of this new sport, we are sharing our curiosity and support for a game that is enjoyed by people of all ages.
Pickle ball is a paddle sport that combines tennis, badminton, and table tennis in one. If you have never played or witnessed a game of Pickleball, think Wiffle ball meets Ping Pong meets Tennis. But don’t let that description confuse you. The ball used is similar to a Wiffle ball, while the racket used is similar to a short tennis racket only solid like a ping pong paddle rather than webbed. Play happens on a court similar to that of a tennis court.
Even though the game combines three separate games, it is fairly easy to play. Two players each have a paddle, a plastic ball with holes, and a solid surface with a net. Players of the game serve the ball back and forth, similar to a game of tennis. Players also determine points similar to those found in tennis.
Pickleball Beginnings
Pickleball has been around since 1965 and originates on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Friends Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum were thinking of a way to keep their families entertained in the summer. After combining elements of badminton and table tennis, the trio created some equipment and made up a few rules. Interestingly, the hardest thing about the game was finding a name for it. Legend says Joel's dog Pickles made a habit of chasing after the balls and hiding them. One thing led to another and the game became known as Pickleball. We're not sure how true this is, but it's a cute story to share.
5 Fun Pickleball Facts
- Pickleball players and fans are called "Picklers."
- When a team scores zero points in Pickleball the loss is known as being "Pickled."
- Some people eat mustard before playing Pickleball to avoid getting leg cramps.
- The non-volley zone in front of the Pickleball net is call the "Kitchen."
- A "dink shot" is the result of the ball landing in the Kitchen.

Boil water advisory issued for entire East Bank of New Orleans, Algiers Point
by: Christian Olivier
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A precautionary boil water advisory has been issued for the entire East Bank of New Orleans and Algiers point on Tuesday, Aug. 6 after a balloon caused a power outage at a water plant.
The advisory comes from the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans in consultation with the Louisiana Department of Health and follows water pressures dipping below 20 PSI due to power failure at the Carrollton Water Treatment Plant. The Algiers Water Treatment Plant was also briefly affected by the power outage.
“A Mylar ballon contacted a powerline near the Carrollton plant at approximately 7 p.m., which created a very brief power fluctuation—causing pumps to be tripped offline. SWBNO crews were able to switch over to backup power and get additional pumps online, but not before the water pressure fell below the threshold for issuing a precautionary boil water advisory,” Entergy New Orleans reported.
Water pressure to the affected areas has been restored, but the advisory remains in effect until water samples are collected and tested.
On Wednesday morning, the SWBNO announced that the advisory will likely remain in effect until Thursday afternoon.
Additionally, the department reported that an employee was seriously injured while working to get the pumps back online. The SWBNO is investigating how it happened.
The part of the West Bank that’s affected falls within the following boundaries:
- Donner Street to Idaho Street
- Idaho Street from Donner Street to General de Gaulle Drive
- Wall Boulevard from General de Gaulle Drive to Pace Boulevard
- Pace Boulevard from Wall Boulevard to General Meyer Avenue
- Merrill Street from General Meyer Avenue to Patterson Drive
People in the affected areas should drink, cook, clean food or brush teeth with either boiled or bottled water until further notice. Anyone with a compromised immune system should also take these precautions when washing their hands, showering or bathing.
$5M gifted for creation of first-ever Black medical school in New Orleans
The SWBNO encourages the following precautions for healthy adults:
- “[For] washing hands, use soap and tap water, dry hands, then apply hand sanitizer; the safest option is to wash with bottled or boiled water.”
- “[For] showering or bathing, be careful not to swallow any water. Infants, young children and disabled persons should be supervised to ensure water is not ingested. Residents with open wounds, chronic illness or weakened immune systems should use boiled or bottled water to bathe until the advisory is lifted.”
Residents will be notified by the SWBNO when the boil water advisory is lifted. The LDH also provides recommendations for managing a boil water advisory.

SAFETY TIPS
These hot temperatures can become life-threatening if the proper precautions are not taken. Residents can visit weatherwise.nola.gov to find localized updates on weather conditions when considering outdoor activities.
Residents are advised to take the following precautions to prevent health emergencies due to overexposure to extreme heat:
- Stay indoors in air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day
- If you must perform outdoor activities, do so early in the morning or late in the evening
- Wear light, loose-fitting clothing
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun
- Be sure to drink plenty of water, and do not wait until you’re thirsty
- The very young, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, are at a greater risk for heat-related health issues and should take extra precautions to stay cool and hydrated
- Check on neighbors, children, the elderly and chronically ill to make sure they are okay, especially every hour if power outages occur.
Children and pets should never be left unattended in a vehicle. Even in 70-degree weather, the interior temperature of a vehicle can increase rapidly to over 100 degrees in just 20 minutes. Cracking a window does not help. Leaving a child or pet unattended in a vehicle often leads to a life-threatening emergency. Anyone who sees a child or animal unattended in a vehicle is urged to call 9-1-1 immediately.
For more information about heat-related illnesses, tips on staying cool and to receive up-to-date alerts, please visit ready.nola.gov.

New Crazy Johnnie’s to open in Metairie. Here’s the plan to revive a legendary restaurant
Ten years after beloved original closed, new restaurant taking shape.
- Crazy Johnnie's was a Fat City steak house known for its casual vibe and low prices. It closed in 2014.
It started with sauce and seasoning mix reviving the Crazy Johnnie’s Steak House name. That lit a fire for countless people who remember this low-key legend of Metairie’s dining past. Soon it will also light the grills on a new restaurant.
Late last year, Mike Landry cooked up a plan to bring back the sauces and seasonings from Crazy Johnnie’s, which closed a decade earlier.
A filet mignon po-boy, once a standard at Crazy Johnnie's Steak House, is back in circulation at markets in Metairie and Kenner. (Staff photo by Ian McNulty, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune)
The response went through the roof as people clamored for the stuff with rekindled memories of a favorite restaurant. Soon, Landry had assembled a team to serve the restaurant’s famous filet mignon po-boys with pop-ups at outdoor markets in Jefferson Parish, drawing long lines to its stand.
Now plans are advancing for a new restaurant under the Crazy Johnnie’s name in Metairie.
The former City Bar Metairie sits on Veterans Boulevard and Edenborn Avenue.
Landry and his partners have leased the former City Bar Metairie location at 3560 Veterans Memorial Blvd., a few blocks from the original restaurant’s home.
He says a thorough renovation is in the works that will transform the space. Pending permits, work could begin this week to have the new restaurant ready to open in early fall.
“It’s really going to be a really cool spot,” Landry said.
Familiar faces, menu
The menu will follow the template from the old days, led by steaks, “crazy potatoes,” the house take on New Orleans style BBQ shrimp and that filet mignon po-boy.
Landry, who is related to the family that once ran Crazy Johnnie’s, is assembling staff and that includes many who worked at the restaurant back in the day. One of those is Elroy “Honey” Mayberry, who has been manning the grill at pop-ups.
Landry said he originally had no intention of opening a restaurant, but the outpouring of goodwill since bringing back the sauce and seasoning created a momentum of its own.
“It’s absolutely happening now, I don’t even have a choice,” he said.
How the legend started
The original Crazy Johnnie’s Steak House, named for the late Johnnie Schram, started out in 1987 as a neighborhood bar in Metairie’s Fat City area, at 3520 18th St. A simple “steak night” promotion proved so popular that the operation evolved into a full-time restaurant.
It was known for its inexpensive steaks and tavern-like atmosphere, a place to eat like a king for a pittance of a price, cut from a different cloth than upscale steakhouses.
Rising beef prices eventually began catching up with the restaurant’s business model, however, and by 2013 Schram was ready to retire. But once regulars heard it would shut down, they turned out in such numbers that Crazy Johnnie’s stayed open for several more months. It eventually shut for good in the spring of 2014.

buoyant /bɔɪənt/
Definition: able to float easily; cheerful and optimistic
Origin: from French buoyant meaning "able to float", from boyant meaning "floating", from boier meaning "to drink" (because a floating object seems to be drinking from the water)
Example: The cork was so buoyant that it bobbed up and down in the water.
Able to float is a simple phrase that perfectly captures the meaning of "buoyant". When an object is buoyant, it is able to float on the surface of a liquid without sinking. This can refer to anything from a life jacket keeping a person afloat to a helium balloon floating in the air. However, "buoyant" can also be used to describe a person's mood or attitude. In this case, it means that the person is cheerful and optimistic, just like a buoyant object floating effortlessly on the water.

NATIONAL FROZEN CUSTARD DAY | August 8
When it comes to scooping up a delicious celebration, National Frozen Custard Day on August 8 knows how to do it right. With a smooth texture and fresh flavor, frozen custard delights in many ways.
Similar to ice cream, frozen custard is made with eggs in addition to cream and sugar. The dessert comes in several flavors, too. Franchises and custard shops all across the country cater to perfecting this creamy dessert and all its delicious options. Mixing it up with toppings such as syrups, nuts and fruits, custard is another satisfying version of ice cream.
In fact, ice cream vendors, Archie and Elton Kohr invented frozen custard on Coney Island, New York in 1919. They found that adding egg yolks to ice cream created a smoother texture and helped the ice cream stay cold longer. On their first weekend, the Kohr brothers sold 18,640 cones on the boardwalk.
More Frozen Custard Facts
- Its popularity grew in 1933 when frozen custard found a market at the World's Fair in Chicago.
- Milwaukee, Wisconsin became known as the unofficial frozen custard capital of the world.
- The United States Food and Drug Administration requires frozen custard products to contain at least 10 percent milkfat and 1.4 percent egg yolk solids.
- Because of the egg yolk, frozen custard must be carefully prepared.
- Frozen custard is commonly prepared fresh at the place of sale.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Red Dress Run
The Red Dress Run unleashes thousands of runners and revelers in red dresses or red gear on the Marigny and French Quarter on Saturday, Aug. 10. The local chapter of the Hash House Harriers organizes the event. The international group is for running enthusiasts who like to run from drinking spot to drinking spot. Over time, the annual Red Dress Run has evolved into more of a festival with a short run and a massive fundraiser for donations to local nonprofits. Registered runners gather in Crescent Park, where there are kegs at the starting line. The run starts at 10 a.m., and participants can return for lunch and music by HorseShoe Kitty. Many others will simply fill the streets of the Quarter with red outfits. Register and find information at noh3.com.
Every year on the second Saturday in August, the New Orleans Hash House Harriers (a local "drinking club with a running problem") host Red Dress Run, a charity "run" in the Crescent City. The run usually begins in the French Quarter or Marigny neighborhoods of New Orleans, although the exact location is only announced to those who registered. The runners, with drinks in hand, continue their route thought the French Quarter and spend the rest of the day celebrating. Expect a sea of red throughout the neighborhood! Even if running isn't your thing, head down in red to get in on the fun. Participants in the Red Dress Run can sign up HERE. Your registration fee includes a registration gift, first 3000 registrations, and entry into Crescent Park—where we tap the kegs at 9am and serve until 4pm, all you can eat food provided by local restaurants (starts at 11:30am), live music and a donation on your behalf to local New Orleans charities. Early bird pricing is available. You must be 21 or older to participate.

Another big piece of the Saints 2024 schedule has officially been finalized, with dates and times established for each of the Saints' three preseason games.
The team will have its first two preseason games out west due to their training camp being held in Irvine, California.
Here's how the slate shapes up:
- P1, Aug. 10 (Saturday): Saints at Arizona Cardinals, 7 p.m. (FOX/Gray TV)
- P2, Aug. 18: Saints at San Francisco 49ers, 7 p.m. (FOX)
- P3, Aug. 25: Tennessee Titans at Saints, 1 p.m. (FOX/Gray TV)
The Saints preseason opponents were announced with the rest of the 2024 schedule earlier in May, but exact dates and times for two of the matchups were left TBD. As is typical with the preseason, start times and days are all over the map. The Saints will kick off their preseason slate with a Saturday night game, and also start an hour later than a typical Sunday kick in the finale, hosted at the Caesars Superdome.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am & Sundays at 11:30am.
Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area? Contact your local public television station for air dates. For a limited time, see new episodes with WYES Passport.

Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.
Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us. 7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 5
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

The New Orleans Saints will host two open training camp practices for fans once they return from California later this summer.
The Saints announced Monday that the two sessions will take place Aug. 20 and Aug. 23 at Yulman Stadium at Tulane University and at Caesars Superdome, respectively. The times of the practices and fan information will be revealed later.
The announcement came as part of the Saints’ unveiling of their training camp schedule. With the Saints holding camp at the University of California, the Saints will leave for Irvine on Monday, July 22 and stay out west until Aug. 19.
When in Irvine, the Saints will hold two days joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16 in leadup to their Aug. 18 preseason showdown at San Francisco. The Saints also have another preseason game a week earlier, when they travel to Arizona to face the Cardinals on Aug. 10.
The Saints are holding their camp in California this year because of construction updates to their practice facility in Metairie. The team is building a new cafeteria, which is expected to be completed in the fall. Saints officials have said the team’s camp in Irvine will be a one-off, with the plan to have camp at the team’s facility next year.
Practices begin Wednesday, July 24.

2024 Full Moon schedule
(all times Eastern)
- Aug. 19 — 2:26 p.m. — Sturgeon Moon
- Sept. 17 — 10:34 p.m. — Corn Moon
- Oct. 17 — 7:26 a.m. — Hunter’s Moon
- Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
- Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. Cold Moon
Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.
Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.
Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.
Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.
Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.
In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.
Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.
Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.
Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

New Orleans: The New Orleans Jazz Museum is more than a building; it is a living embodiment of New Orleans Jazz culture and music in New Orleans. This is due to the vision of one person: Greg Lambousy, Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
Through Greg Lambousy and his staff’s efforts, the New Orleans Jazz Museum has become the epicenter of the New Orleans Jazz scene. From festivals like the Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival, Satchmo Summerfest, Jazz on the Balcony, Weekly free Jazz performances, and the most significant exhibits relative to New Orleans and early Jazz history presented in the correct cultural context, the City of New Orleans.
To paraphrase the great Professor Longhair, “When you come to New Orleans, be sure to go see the New Orleans Jazz Museum.”.
Presentation, 7:30 PM, August 23 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St, NOLA. Free Admission RSVP preferred to: festguide@gmail
Greg Lambousy is the Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Before accepting this position, Lambousy was Director of Curatorial Services for the National World War II Museum. He began his career at the New Orleans Museum of Art and later moved to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). During his twenty-year tenure at the LSM, Lambousy managed the institution’s collections of more than 500,000 artifacts and other historical items, directed improvements to collections storage at the New Orleans Mint, developed conservation and digitization projects across collections and within the Louisiana Historical Center archives, conducted oral histories and guided the selection and accession of materials related to the State’s history. Since 2016, as Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Lambousy has led the expansion of the Museum in programming, education, exhibitions, international relations, and the development of the Gallatin Street Records label. Visitation has increased fourfold since 2016, and revenues from grants, sponsorships, and events have funded operations, while capital programs have advanced the development of the Museum’s Performance Center and Herb Alpert Education Wing, among other aspects of the Museum’s campus

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!
