Dear Friends and Neighbors,
As we prepare to visit our loved ones for the holidays, it is incumbent upon me to stress the importance of safe driving. Each of us bears the individual responsibility to remain alert and cautious while driving on our city roadways.

I strongly believe that fewer choices are more selfish than getting behind the wheel drunk, under the influence of drugs, or without a valid driver's license. A vehicle is capable of inflicting drastic damage. To drive while knowing that you shouldn't, is putting your own wants over the needs of other people’s safety, with unpredictable and potentially extremely dangerous results.

In Queens County, my office holds accountable those who choose to disregard the rules of the road and break the law. Every case is thoughtfully and carefully assessed to ensure we’re holding impaired, unlicensed, and reckless drivers accountable to the best of our ability. We will continue to work with our city agency and law enforcement partners to ensure safety on our streets.

With the holiday season upon us, let us all remember that, when we are driving, everyone we encounter on the road—other drivers, pedestrians, cyclists—deserves our respect and consideration and has every right to reach their destination safely.
In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney
Select Cases of Interest
  • Brooklyn men indicted in series of convenience store robberies
  • Queens father indicted for alleged murder of 3-year-old son
  • Two men indicted for deadly exchange of gunfire in broad daylight in Brookville
Fatal Overdoses Awareness
Overdose fatalities are up by 50 percent in Queens this year, and three of every four of those deaths are attributed to fentanyl and fentanyl derivatives.

My Office has worked relentlessly to get this poison and its merchant off of our streets by investigating and bringing serious charges against alleged drug dealers, all accused of trying to profit from other people's addictions. Illicit drugs, and the clear danger they help fuel, have no place in our communities.

Meeting with U.S. Senator Gillibrand
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of joining U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for a discussion on public safety and our ongoing partnership to combat gun violence and illegal exploitation in Queens County.

I thank her for her leadership and look forward to our work together in the new year!
Holiday Toy Giveaway
My Office, in collaboration with VIO/K GROUP, was delighted to host a Picture with Santa & Holiday Toy Giveaway Event this week at P.S. 52.

More than 300 toys were donated by members of my staff, in addition to VIO/K Group founder, David Hue. The children had a wonderful time picking their gifts and taking photos with Santa!
Hanukkah Lighting
In proudly lighting their Hanukkah candles this week, families across Queens reaffirm our collective right to practice our chosen faith - a right I will staunchly safeguard.

This week, I joined Congresswoman Grace Meng, Chabad of Rego Park, and the Reform Temple of Queens for their annual Hanukkah celebrations. I am grateful to them for ensuring that members of the Jewish faith are heard and represented.

Recognition of Our Local Heroes
Chaplain Christina Winslow, Founder of A Cause A Concern A Solution Network, Inc., has dedicated her life to neighborhood unity and empowerment. The non-profit organization she runs has been in existence for 17 years to help address the needs of women, children, and veterans in our communities.

I was glad for the opportunity to present Ms. Winslow with a letter of recognition during a Christmas Toy Drive that her organization held for local residents in Southeast Queens.
Holiday Scams
As a reminder, when shopping during the holiday season - or any time of the year - always be mindful of the potential for scams. Fraudsters will take advantage of any opportunity to separate you from your money. Do your part to avoid becoming a victim.
