- Watermelons are tropical or subtropical plants and need temperatures higher than about 77 °F to thrive.
- Major pests of the watermelon include aphids, fruit flies, and root-knot nematodes.
- Watermelon flesh can be red, pink, orange, yellow, or white.
- In ancient times, watermelons were placed in the burial tombs of kings to nourish them in the afterlife.
- While there 200-300 varieties of watermelon grown in the United States and Mexico, there are only about 50 varieties that are popular today.
- It is the cousin of cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash.
You can pick up your watermelon at the Market this Thursday or Saturday. Store it in the fridge for a few hours before eating, and you'll have a cool, nutritious treat to help you cope with the summer heat!
