Summer Opportunities!

CareerDev’s Summer Internship Award

Apply soon for summer funding to support your research experience, volunteer opportunity, or summer internship. The Summer Internship Award, provided by the Career Development Center, disburses up to $3000 in two payments to offset living, accommodation, and other expenses associated with professional development opportunities, including internships, undergraduate research, or career-related community service.

The application

deadline for summer 2025 is Wednesday, April 23.

You must have a position already secured before you apply.

Teach English Abroad

If you are an English Major/Minor and you are looking for a summer opportunity that would qualify for

the award, consider teaching English abroad. Employers may not offer to cover airfare, other travel costs, or visa fees, but CareerDev’s Summer Internship Award could help cover those costs if you apply.

A valuable resource for finding teaching abroad positions is Dave’s ESL Café.

For questions about internships, contact Tim Randell

(trandell@sandiego.edu),

Professor of Practice,

Coordinator of Careers and Internships for the English Department.

Sigma Tau Induction Ceremony

Thank you especially to our Keynote Speaker, Professor Deniz Perin-Coombs, and our departing academic advisor, Dr. Maura Giles-Watson!

A key takeaway from Professor Deniz Perin-Coombs's speech:

"To understand anybody–and by extension, to empathize with another–we must first understand ourselves. You, dear students, you do this work–with determination and without fear. (Okay, you might be afraid sometimes, but you do it anyway, which really makes what you do all the more courageous).

Through reading, through writing, through putting in hundreds of hours of reflection and of self-reflection, you work on understanding not just the world, not just society, but yourselves. In doing so, you uncover more about yourselves daily. And in doing so, too, you deepen and widen your empathy."

SAAM EVENTS for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Tuesday, April 1, 2025 — Wednesday, April 30, 2025 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Each April, our campus comes together to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)—a time to raise awareness, educate, and advocate for a world free from sexual violence. Rooted in our commitment to fostering peace, working for justice, and leading with love, we dedicate this month to supporting survivors, challenging harmful narratives, and empowering our community with the knowledge and tools to prevent sexual violence. Our theme for this month is Together We Act, United We Change. As a university, we are called to uphold every person's dignity and create an environment where safety, respect, and justice are non-negotiable.

Whether you are a survivor, an ally, or someone seeking to learn more, we invite you to stand with us.

Let us come together as one Torero community to challenge the systems that enable harm and to build a future grounded in justice and healing. By raising our voices and taking action, we can stand against violence and offer hope to those who need it most.
