Dear Tikva supporters,

As Rosh Hashanah draws nearer, it is a time to reflect on the past year, which has been marked by both the sorrow of October 7, 2023, and the hope for a brighter future here in our community and around the world.

The housing affordability crisis is so acute in British Columbia that providing homes is critical not just for the most vulnerable. Individuals and families who would have never expected to be anywhere near a position where they need our help are seeking community and security.

Your immense generosity has enabled Tikva to respond to this growing need. From operating 29 homes and helping 95 people in 2018, in 2024 we operate 168 homes, providing homes for over 375 people. We were also able to expand our short-term rent relief program for those living in market rental housing who were unable to afford their rent due to a temporary crisis.

For me, one of the most profound lessons learned in the past year has been the connectedness of our Jewish community that transcends geographical boundaries, it bolsters our collective resilience, and empowers us to face global challenges together—the brit of arvut hadadit (covenant of communal responsibility).

Our properties remain 100% full with many more individuals and families on the waiting list. Through the Jewish Housing Registry, we are helping integrate information from multiple housing providers under one digital roof for those in our community in need of innovative and affordable housing.

We are truly grateful for your support, however, the need will always outweigh our resources. Tikva's affordable housing solutions are funded entirely through donations and grants. Together we are changing lives!

Shanah Tovah Umetukah and Shabbat Shalom,

Anat Gogo Executive Director

A REFRESHED IDENTITY

From Hope to Home

Tikva has rapidly evolved to become a force for affordable housing solutions in the Lower Mainland, and has ambitious plans to make an even greater impact. Because of this, it was time for a refreshed visual identity to reflect these plans along with a bold new positioning line—From Hope to Home.

The new stronger branding is reflected in all the Tikva touch points, including visual letterhead, signage and all logo applications.

We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Alvin Wasserman for generously donating his time and brilliant expertise to this important project. Alvin assembled an incredible creative team to help usher us into a hopeful future. A special thanks goes to Brenda Wasserman for her time, leadership, inspiration, and for navigating us throughout the process and guiding us with confidence across the finish line!

Alvin and Brenda’s work has inspired a fresh and modern look for Tikva that reflects both where we are today, and where we are headed in the future. Their vision has ensured that Tikva’s identity remains as strong and dynamic as our mission.

BOARD CHAIR MESSAGE

High Holiday Greetings

Entering the sacred days of the High Holidays, I want to extend my warmest wishes to you and your families on behalf of Tikva Housing. This period of introspection, renewal and gratitude is also an opportunity to think about the values that guide our community, especially the idea of providing a stable and affordable home for all.

Soon after our holiest days, we will celebrate Sukkot. This year, as we gather in our sukkahs, let us be reminded of the fragile dwellings our ancestors lived in during their journey through the desert. May we also be reminded of the privilege and responsibility we share to ensure that everyone in our community has a safe, permanent and welcoming place to call home. Together, we are not just helping to build homes, but a stronger, more connected community where everyone can feel secure.

May the coming year be filled with blessings, health, and peace for all. Thank you for your continued support of Tikva Housing’s mission, guided by our Jewish values and commitment to Tikkun Olam (repairing the world).

Wishing you a sweet New Year on behalf of myself and the entire board of directors,

Rhonda Sacks Chair, Board of Directors

Rent Relief Program Update

Since 2011, Tikva Housing’s Rent Relief program has provided cash assistance to nearly 150 eligible low-income individuals and families living in market rental housing and unable to afford rent due to a temporary crisis.

Between September 2023 to August 2024, we helped 24 families, including 27 adults and seven children in Vancouver, Surrey, Maple Ridge, Richmond and Delta—increasing the monthly assistance to reflect inflation and rising rents.

As of September 2024, the program supports 13 adults and four children in Metro Vancouver.

Since its inception, the Rent Relief program’s lead donor has been the Dayhu Charitable Foundation (formerly the Ben & Esther Dayson Charitable Foundation.) Their generous annual contribution is augmented by additional donors and foundations, including the Phyliss and Irving Snider Foundation, the RBC Foundation, the Betty Averbach Foundation, Miryam and Rafael Filosof, the Krell Family Endowment Fund and the Zacks Family Charitable Foundation.

The impact of funding from our generous donors can be seen through the gratitude of our recipients:

"I really appreciate all the time and attention you have given to my case, and I look forward to the day when I can repay all the kindness and support shown to me. Todah rabah." – NH
