Headlining our Promise of Spring auction is Andy Warhol’s Daisy, a unique work inspired by the artist's research for the unrealized Tacoma Dome commission. As is occasionally the case with Warhol’s work, Daisy is the product of a proofing process that became more interesting to the artist than the commission itself — its wild experimental color prized by the artist as a personal project long after the commission’s requirements had been fulfilled. Warhol remains the prince of market darlings not simply for his universal appeal, as evidenced by this gorgeous work, but because production and the market itself were what so fascinated the artist. He pushed the process to new points, breaking the stringent limitations of strict editioning, and produced brilliant collections of vibrant one-of-a-kind variants that foresaw a coveted value above and beyond what any of his contemporaries could have expected.
