I just got back from the Guatemala trip with Cindy Fisher and 17 other mosaic artists. What an adventure!

We participated in making four large outdoor mosaics for various walls in the town San Lucas Toliman. It’s a small town three hours outside of Guatemala City that’s a bastion of Mayan culture..

Five of my students came with me. It was so wonderful having this experience together! (Left to right: Amy, Rachel, Sue, me, Carol and Kristy.)

Below are the beautiful mosaics we made!

I could write multiple newsletters about this eleven-day experience! (Due to snow delays in Boston, we added an unexpected day in Miami.)

The hotel is on beautiful Lake Atitlan.

Cindy orchestrates this trip four weeks per year (two in February and two in April), with each group coming for one week.

The idea is that the influx of public art will make the town more of a tourist destination.

So far, she has overseen the creation of 38 gorgeous mosaics in San Lucas Toliman. She designs them based on Mayan culture and activities.

We had such a fun group! We met so many wonderful people from all over the country and we all really enjoyed each other's company!

The hotel grounds were stunning and the food fantastic and fresh (ingredients from the farm on the grounds). It is a safe town and the people were very friendly.

We did some shopping in addition to making mosaics, and I really regret not buying more! We all bought aprons made by Florinda, a talented local seamstress!

In addition, we visited a women's shelter, went kayaking, learned about local textile production, and took in lectures about Mayan culture.

All the mosaics are from photographs of local residents!

Danbar helps Cindy install the mosaics each year, and this is a mosaic of his mother.

This is the girl in the original photograph of the quinceañera (a celebration for 15-year-old Latina girls).

Her mother had given permission to use the photo, but she happened to be walking by one day, and was so surprised to see it!

This is a "wood's walker." We saw them on trails and around town taking wood to central areas for the residents to purchase.

Now back to the studio events!

This 30x12 inch piece is a tribute to my wonderful students.

It's called Creativity is Contagious.

In my studio, people discuss their ongoing and future mosaic creations. It creates an invigorating atmosphere of  innovation and feedback.

Even my students’ seemingly inconsequential conversations about their personal lives can fuel inspiration. This cross-pollination of minds represents contagion in the best sense of the word!

The piece represents three brains connecting, just as they do in the studio!

Weekly Classes

Tuesdays and Thursdays

10-12:30

Colleen went paragliding in Switzerland, and made this stunning piece from a picture of the experience!

Leslie is always making beautiful gifts for friends!

Barbara used beads from her jewelry-making stash to create this wonderful abstract piece. It was inspired by the hinge she found that is in the left corner of the piece!

Melissa's husband made this substrate (base) with curved glass in the center with wood surrounding it. What a clever concept!

Children ages eight and up are welcome at the studio with a participating adult! Fourteen and older are welcome without an adult!

Great pendants!

Parent/Child Class

Tuesdays 3:30-5

Sisters Maddy and Amelia had fun making these beachy pieces! Photobombed by Eliza.

Yes, that's me in the mirror taking a picture of Eliza's bee-inspired piece, as the mirror is shaped like a honeycomb.

Maddie is the photo-bomber this time!

Scout Troops

I offer this patch to scouts who attend a class with their troop! Ages eight and up learn to cut the tile!

It's a great time to plan for the next school year or have a special summer activity!

Private Parties

I was lucky enough to have the Medway Garden Club come for a class!

If you are in a garden, neighborhood, card, or book group, let’s plan an event!

Stay Warm!

Hugs! Cheryl
