Celebrate Women's History Month!
The American Women's History Initiative will amplify women's voices to honor the past, inform the present and inspire the future.
The stories we tell and read deepen our understanding of women’s contributions to America and the world, showing how far women have advanced and how we as a country value equality and the contributions of all our citizens.

From Nantucket Island to the Korean Island of Jeju, we highly recommend
Lisa See
’s
The Island of Sea Women.
"I was lost in this story from the first sentence,
“An old woman sits on the beach, a cushion strapped to her bottom, sorting algae that’s washed ashore.”
What follows is a story of the haenyeo, female divers on the island of Jeju, known for their independent spirit, iron will and determination. This novel illuminates a unique and unforgettable culture, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous physical work. We meet Mi-ja and Young-sook and hear of their joys and struggles in and out of the sea. I loved it."

Our Spring 2019 Nantucket Book Foundation Visiting Author is
~ Jason Reynolds ~
He will be visiting our schools on April 4th, 2019 thanks to a generous grant from the Nantucket Golf Club.
The Nantucket Book Foundation Visiting Author Program was created to fill a need expressed by the Nantucket Public Schools to bring in authors who are relevant to the current curriculum and who reflect the growing diversity of our student population. For our island students, to be given a book, and then to have the book studied and discussed, followed by an actual visit by the author, is an incredible opportunity to connect with the writer. Our program offers students a window into understanding the writing process, to be able to ask questions of the author, to delve into what shaped this writer’s life and what created the themes of the book. Working in partnership with teachers and librarians, our efforts in connecting students with the authors of books which have been read, studied and discussed creates a dynamic that is hard to match. Sparks ignite; readers are born.
Nantucket Book Foundation Board President and NBF Visiting Author Program creator, Mary Haft, says it best: “Of all the stars in the literary universe that are lighting up skies for children, Jason is his own constellation.”
Jason Reynolds is a New York Times bestselling author, a Newbery Award Honoree, a Printz Award Honoree, National Book Award Honoree, a Kirkus Award winner, a two time Walter Dean Myers Award winner, an NAACP Image Award Winner, and the recipient of multiple Coretta Scott King honors. The American Booksellers Association’s 2017 spokesperson for Indies First, his many books include
When I Was the Greatest, Boy in the Black Suit, All American Boys (co-written with Brendan Kiely), As Brave as You, For Every One, the Track series
(
