Plan your 2025 Annual Meeting Schedule

The FMEC has posted the detailed schedule of sessions and other events on the 2025 FMEC Annual Meeting page. This can help you plan your Annual Meeting schedule, and if you are speaking you can find when your program is scheduled.

Extend Your Educational Experience with a Preconference

Preconferences held on Thursday, September 18 are excellent opportunities for your residents and faculty to add to their meeting experience, focus on a specific topic, and network with other attendees. Registration for the Annual Meeting is not necessary, you can go just to attend a preconference. If you’ve already registered for the Annual Meeting and want to add a preconference, go to Annual Meeting Registration and select “only need to register for a preconference.”

FMEC Board Member News

Thank you, Dr. Conti, and Welcome, Dr. Adebambo!

The FMEC Board of Trustees is sad to lose member Tracey Conti, MD, as she transitions to a new position outside the FMEC region. Dr. Conti has served on the Board since 2020, representing UPMC and its many residencies. She also contributed to FMEC projects such as our hereditary breast cancer collaborative and more. The FMEC Board is grateful to her many years of leadership and wishes her well in her new endeavors.

The FMEC Board of Trustees is also pleased to welcome Dr. Bode Adebambo, Interim Chair of Family Medicine at the MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, OH, to the Board as a new member-at-large Dr. Bode’s term will run through the 2027 Annual Meeting. Dr. Adebambo is a long-term FMEC participant and volunteer, most notably serving as a Planning Committee Coordinator for the last few years, helping to review all 400+ program submissions in order to put the Annual Meeting schedule together. We are excited for Dr. Adebambo to share her leadership and expertise with the FMEC!

Call for Student and Resident Board Members

In 2023, the FMEC Board of Trustees expanded from 15 to 17 members to add a medical student and a resident. Hannah Clarke and Dr. Taylor Rider have been great additions to the FMEC Board since joining in 2024! The FMEC is seeking a medical student and a resident to join the FMEC Board in late 2025, to serve alongside Hannah and Taylor through September 2026 and then assume their official terms for 2026-2027. The commitment is nearly 2 years, during which time the candidates must be actively enrolled in either a medical school or a family medicine residency training program in the FMEC region (14 states +DC – see the list on the FMEC website) or at an international medical school which has an active FMEC Partnership (see FMEC Partner list). Interested students and residents apply online (FMEC Student/Resident Board Position Application) by October 13, 2025, and email Scott Allen at scott.allen@fmec.net with any questions.

FMEC Projects Update

IMPLICIT News

FMEC’s IMPLICIT project has updated its acronym – IMPLICIT now stands for Innovations for Maternal and Perinatal Care Improvement. IMPLICIT was also honored and excited to receive resources from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDOH) through its mini-grant initiative to improve maternal and infant health outcomes and to reduce inequities in maternal and infant mortality in Philadelphia. IMPLICIT will expand to include additional clinics in Philadelphia, addressing recommendations from the Philadelphia Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) to improve access to preventive and preconception care, direct more attention to the postpartum period, and strengthen coordination between systems. Read more about the new name and grant in this August 4, 2025 News Release and visit the new IMPLICIT website to learn more about IMPLICIT.

Residency Learning Networks

The FMEC received seed programming funds from the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) for its project, FMEC Learning Networks: Collaborating to Accelerate Innovations. Even before ACGME requirements, the FMEC was a leader in creating residency learning networks and collaboratives. The ABFM grant funding will help the FMEC formalize and advance its work over the next three years. We are seeking volunteers who want to help shape and lead residency learning networks! You will gain skills and experience, help identify issues and topics for collaborative work across residencies, and more. Please contact Scott Allen at scott.allen@fmec.net for more information. In the meantime, read more about FMEC’s past and current learning networks at our new FMEC Residency Learning Networks.

Young Breast Cancer Survivors

In October, FMEC will launch a new residency learning network project focused on the unique needs of breast cancer survivors, with a specific focus on survivors under 45 and Black women. We are seeking individual physicians and clinics to participate in the education and quality improvement (QI) intervention. In April, project leaders conducted a literature review and identified 10 effective policy, systems and environmental (PSE) strategies to better support young breast cancer patients, survivors and their families. Participants in this project will learn about the risk and incidence of breast cancer in young women and the challenges survivors face in accessing ongoing care, psychosocial support, and other services; identify and implement breast cancer screening and improve processes for referral; and increase access to evidence-based tools and other supports for cancer survivors, including Survivorship Care Plans (SCPs), patient navigation and peer-based support programs, group psychosocial interventions, access to clinical trials, and more.

This opportunity is open to family medicine residency programs and primary care providers at FQHCs and other community-based sites. You can implement this across an entire clinic site, involving multiple providers, or as an individual or small group of providers. Participating physicians will receive CME credit and performance improvement credit to satisfy their maintenance of ABFM Family Medicine Certification. To sign up to receive more information (no commitment), please complete this simple online survey.

Student Loan Default? Don’t Let Scammers Take Advantage

Student loan collections have resumed, and with millions of borrowers now in default, scammers are seizing the opportunity to prey on confusion and frustration. If you’re behind on your student loans, it’s more important than ever to stay vigilant.

Why it Matters: Scammers are getting more sophisticated, and student loan borrowers are a prime target—especially after a period of paused collections. Here’s what you need to watch out for:

  • Unsolicited calls: If someone cold-calls you about your loans in default, be suspicious.
  • Requests for sensitive info: Never share your Social Security number or login credentials for your loan servicer or studentaid.gov—no one but you should have access.
  • Pressure to pay immediately: Be wary of anyone demanding instant payment, especially through unfamiliar websites.
  • Suspicious emails: If you get an official-looking email from an address you don’t recognize, don’t click any links. Instead, go directly to the official “.studentaid.gov” website (bookmark it for easy access!).

Take Action: Don’t let scammers add to your student loan stress!

If you’re unsure about a communication, double-check before responding. When in doubt, contact your loan servicer directly using the information on the official studentaid.gov website.

Have questions? Book a Discovery session with a Student Loan Guide at Navigate—there's no cost for this call! Use this special link so Navigate knows we sent you: https://navigate.as.me/FMEC

Stay safe and informed as you manage your student loans.

ACOFP Campaign

The American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) has launched a new campaign to help medical students find their way into family medicine. The new campaign, Family Physicians DO More, was created with high school, undergraduate, and medical students in mind—especially those wondering if osteopathic family medicine is right for them. Backed by the American Board of Family Medicine Foundation through its Family Medicine Next initiative, the campaign is about more than just promotion. It’s about meeting students where they are, listening to what they need, and giving them the tools to envision a fulfilling future in family medicine.
