| Planet Money Goes Behind the Scenes of Bookselling | | |
You may or may not be familiar with NPR's popular economics podcast "Planet Money," but the creators recently published a book, making it especially relevant to bookstores this season. (And, yes, we do have it in stock!)
We were especially interested in the series they produced investigating the path of a book -- from finding a home with a publisher, to the physical creation of a book, to where and how books are placed in front of readers (and what happens when they don't sell), to the influence of bestseller lists.
As booksellers, we are often asked about how we determine which books to stock, and the third episode of the series paints a really excellent picture of the book buyer's role in this process. If you've ever wanted to know more about the business of publishing and bookselling, this is a really fun and informative series!
Here at the Galaxy, we're seeing the results of our time spent poring over catalogs this past winter as new books arrive, and our shelves are loaded to the brim, ready for summer reading.
Keep reading for a look at the books that will be arriving through the month of June, as well as event dates for TWO book launches we're hosting this month!

BOOK LAUNCH:
Brett Stanciu, Call it Madness
Tuesday, June 30, 7 p.m.
at Jeudevine Memorial Library
Parker Ladd Community Room
Celebrate the publication of her new novel Call it Madness with Hardwick author Brett Stanciu. We are very excited to co-host this event with the Jeudevine Memorial Library on Tuesday, June 30th, at 7 p.m. in the Parker Ladd Community Room.
Brett Stanciu reflects on her new novel: "In my third book, the novel Call It Madness, the millennial heroine, Avah Lavoie, believes her life has reached a dull dead-end. Then, unexpectedly, her estranged mother phones with news of her great-grandfather’s death. Avah sets out in her Toyota Matrix for an inherited ramshackle Vermont house. She’s fiercely determined to understand how her life was shaped by buried family secrets: a sawmill accident, a mother who overdosed, a missing father. This third book delves into my fullest range as a writer and a woman, digging at the thorniness of life while also reveling in the world’s serendipitous beauty."

| | Vermont Reads Pick 2026-27! | | | | |
The Traveler, by Joseph Eckert Time travel books - in almost any form - are my favorite thing. I love how the rules change and the consequences etc. in each story. But not since The Time Traveler's Wife have a I read one that was such an emotional gut-punch. Time travel is a whole different enchilada when the heart of it is a love story - a person who very much wants to be present with those he loves and how having that so fundamentally and radically challenged makes him - and his family - relearn what it means to be in relationship, to share a life. - Andrea

Shampoo Effect, by Jenny Jackson This will be at the top of my list of recommendations for anyone looking for a page-turner, a juicy summer read that is insightful, well-written and surprising. This was a delicious read! - Andrea
| | Radical Duke, by Danielle Allen: With the 250th anniversary of the US upon us, there has been a lot of renewed interest in Thomas Paine and his pamphlet - but how did we not know about this guy??? Turns out there was essentially a "No Kings" movement in the 1700s in England - fomented by the Duke of Richmond, one of the closest advisors to the king! (Also one of the wealthiest men in the kingdom). Totally readable and unputdownable. - contributed by one of the Galaxy's "silent" partners | | |
