Greetings!
We are very excited to announce upcoming exhibitions and seminars, and updates from our filmmaking community.
Award-winning, Emmy nominated, independent filmmaker, sound recordist, and TWN Executive Director, JT Takagi will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by DOC NYC at its annual Visionaries Tribute event on November 11, 2026 at Gotham Hall in Manhattan.
TWN Workshop graduate, filmmaker, and activist ManSee Kong’s film “What Happened to Danny,” will have its world premiere at DOC NYC on November 15, 2026. The film is about Chinatown native Danny Chen who dies while serving in Afghanistan in 2011 after relentless hazing by supervisors. Troubling questions surrounding his death compel his grieving family and New York community to embark on a determined search for answers and justice.
The DOC NYC film festival will also feature the world premiere of “The Newsreel: Characterization of Subversive Organization,” a film about the origins of Third World Newsreel. Directed by Ivora Cusack and James June Schneider and produced by Annick Lemonnier, the film dives into the core of the fiery hopes of a group of 1960s NYC filmmakers and activists called The Newsreel.
In exhibitions, the Christine Choy Retrospective continues in Philadelphia and Knoxville, the Newsreel Retrospective (1968-1972) in Chicago and the African Spiritualities Film Series in Chicago.
Congratulations to TWN Workshop Graduate Felix Rodriguez who was accepted to Firelight Media's Documentary Lab to work on his film "My Ballroom Story". Also, congrats to film archivist Bill Brand for his exhibit in Paris, "Invisible Fisherman." We thank Brand for his excellent work restoring "A Litany for Survival: The Life and Work of Audre Lorde," and preserving "Mississippi Triangle," and "From Spikes to Spindles" for Third World Newsreel.
We are proud to announce the release of a new short experimental documentary, "Many Moons," directed by Chisato (Chisa) Hughes. This film is available for public and educational screenings. Visit film.twn.org to book your screening.
Scroll down for upcoming evening seminars, exhibitions and grant deadlines. Please follow us on social media for more updates, and thank you for being part of our community as we continue to create, celebrate, and work for social justice together.
