GHG Emissions Training

On December 7, 2023, CALTAP piloted "GHG Emissions & Mitigations in Construction Projects", the second in a series of trainings from CALTAP's Sustainable Engineering Training Academy (SETA).

Presented by lead SETA developer Dr. Hamid Rahai of CSULB's College of Engineering, GHG Emissions & Mitigations opened with a case study on emissions from road pavements before looking at the contributors to GHG emissions from construction and how to mitigate them.

The Engineering of Bridge Building

The National Highway Institute (NHI) is now offering a 7-course series on the engineering of bridge building, with curriculum designed for participants with a background in engineering, project management, or design.

These 7 instructor-led courses are taught by highly knowledgeable SMEs and each establishes different competencies. This course series includes:

  1. LRFD for Highway Bridge Superstructure
  2. LRFR of Highway Bridges
  3. LRFD & Analysis of Curved Steel Highway Bridges
  4. Cable-Stayed Signature Bridge
  5. Engineering for Structural Stability in Bridge Construction
  6. Design & Evaluation of Bridges for Fatigue & Fracture
  7. Strut-&-Tie Modeling (STM) for Concrete Structures

2024 RAISE Grants NOFO

The USDOT announced the availability of $1.5B in 2024 grant funding through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity (RAISE) discretionary grant program.

RAISE helps urban and rural communities move forward on projects that modernize roads, bridges, transit, rail, ports, and intermodal transportation, and that make our transportation systems safer, more accessible, more affordable, and more sustainable.

Eligible Projects Include:

  • Highway or bridge projects
  • Public transportation projects
  • Port infrastructure
  • Intermodal projects
  • Surface transportation projects on tribal lands

The deadline for RAISE 2024 applications is February 28, 2024

California Traffic Safety Grants

The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) is now accepting applications for projects that seek to prevent serious injury and death resulting from motor vehicle crashes. Applications should relate to an OTS priority area.

These grants are available for public entities and local governments. Check out the Grant Program Manual for more information on eligibility and/or watch the recorded OTS webinar about applying for FY2024 funding.

Geotechnical Tools for Slope Management

December 14, 2023, 11:00am – 12:30pm PT

FHWA is hosting "Geotechnical Tools for Slope Management", a free webinar in which engineers and geotech experts share their experience, expertise, and tool knowledge to help field practitioners identify and mitigate vulnerabilities in a variety of road and soil settings.

Come Learn:

  • What mapping tools will identify potentially unstable slopes and other geotechnical features before and during project field reviews.

  • What resources are available to determine adaptation measures.

  • How do slopes & culverts interact to achieve resiliency preparedness

No registration required, you can access the meeting here on 12/14

Developing Crash Prediction Models

NCHRP has released "Development of Crash Prediction Models for Short-Term Durations", which provides roadway safety practitioners within state departments of transportation with short-term crash prediction models to be used for estimating safety performance.

Crash prediction methods, which are used to identify crash hotspots or crash severity, consist of safety performance functions (SPFs), crash modification factors, and severity distribution functions. These tools use annual average daily traffic data along with geometric and operational characteristics to predict the annual average crash frequency.
