August: Back to School, Community Support, and Healthy Families

As a new school year begins, families across Contra Costa County are settling into new routines and preparing for a successful year ahead. At the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Contra Costa County (CAPC), we're committed to helping children and families thrive through education, prevention, and access to valuable community resources.

On August 17, we celebrate National Nonprofit Day and recognize the many organizations, volunteers, community partners, and supporters who work every day to strengthen our communities. We are grateful for everyone who helps make CAPC's mission possible and for the opportunity to serve children and families throughout Contra Costa County.

Thank you for being part of our community. We wish all students, families, educators, and community partners a safe, healthy, and successful school year.

🚨 CAPC's Speak Up Be Safe Program Expands to Rodeo Hills Elementary

We're excited to announce that CAPC's Speak Up Be Safe (SUBS) program is expanding to Rodeo this school year.

Speak Up Be Safe is an evidence based child abuse prevention program designed for elementary and middle school students.

Through engaging, age appropriate lessons, students learn how to recognize unsafe situations, understand healthy boundaries, identify trusted adults, and use their voices to ask for help when something doesn't feel right.

The program also teaches important topics including bullying prevention, cyberbullying awareness, personal safety, and responsible technology use. Each lesson encourages children to build confidence, practice decision making skills, and understand that it is always okay to tell a trusted adult if they feel unsafe.

Families also receive educational materials that encourage conversations at home, helping reinforce these important safety messages beyond the classroom.

By expanding into Rodeo, CAPC is reaching even more children with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe, build confidence, and create healthier future

Together, we are helping children stay safe, build confidence, and find their voice.

📚 Back to School Safety Tips for Families

A successful school year starts with healthy routines and open communication.

Here are a few ways to help your child have a safe and positive start to the year:

  • Create consistent bedtime and morning routines.

  • Talk with your child every day about school and how they're feeling.

  • Help your child identify trusted adults they can go to if they ever need help.

  • Review walking, biking, bus, and online safety before school begins.

  • Encourage kindness, respect, and inclusion both in person and online.

  • Stay involved by communicating with teachers and participating in school activities whenever possible.

Small conversations each day can build trust, confidence, and resilience.

As summer comes to a close and families prepare for a new school year, it's the perfect time to refresh your family's digital safety habits.

Our partners at Sage Haven Resources recently wrapped up their Safe Tech Summer series, a seven week campaign filled with practical tips to help parents create a safer digital environment for their children. The series covered topics including parental controls, safer device settings, managing apps and messaging, and encouraging healthy screen time habits.

As your children head back to school, here are a few simple reminders:

📱 Review parental controls on phones, tablets, and gaming devices.

💬 Talk regularly with your child about online safety, cyberbullying, and how to recognize unsafe situations.

⏰ Create healthy screen time routines, especially before bedtime and during homework.

👨‍👩‍👧 Keep communication open so your child feels comfortable asking questions or sharing concerns about their online experiences.

Small changes can make a big difference. By working together, families can help children build healthy digital habits and stay safer both online and offline.

🤝 In the Community

On July 31, Angelina Shipe attended Parkside Elementary's Welcome Back Event. The event welcomed students and their families back to school by providing free school uniforms, backpacks, haircuts, and information about after-school programs.

Angelina shared information about child abuse prevention, family violence prevention, parenting resources, and other local services available to children and families. The event was a great opportunity to connect with families, increase awareness of available resources, and let community members know where they can turn for support when needed.
