On the Horizon

Chugim Recap: 9/23

  • In cooking, students made challah! In February, our fourth grade students will learn about the Jewish values associated with Shabbat.
  • Students in Jews and the Civil Rights Movement learned about Rabbi Israel Dresner and his message of the importance of speaking up when one witnesses injustice. In December, our fourth graders will learn about the Jewish value of b'tselem elohim: That we're all made in God's image.
  • In book club, students brought home their copies of Letters from Rifka. During class, students learned about the history of pogroms. Students in sixth grade will dig deeper into this history in the spring.
  • Students in You Be The Judge debated ethics surrounding the "Trolley problem" and how it relates to the Jewish value of Pikuach Nefesh.
  • In puppetry, students performed plays that explained Jewish rituals such as the reason for B Mitzvahs (which our fifth graders will learn all about starting in November)

Fifth Grade

The annual fifth grade field trip to the Museum of Jewish Heritage is coming up on Monday, October 12th. The bus should leave from TBS no later than 9am and return to TBS by 1pm. You can RSVP your fifth grader here.

The new term of chugim will start on Wednesday, October 7th!

Grades 3-6 can sign up for the new chugim here.

Sunday Recap: 9/27

Kindergarten: Our students learned about Sukkot, and brought home

1st Grade: Our first graders are learning about the Jewish Home this year. To learn about the home-based rituals around Sukkot, they built candy sukkahs. A sweet start to the year!

2nd Grade: Our second graders are learning about Jewish holidays, and made decorations you can see in our TBS sukkah!

3rd Grade: Third graders are learning the Torah stories, and began this week with the story of Creation. They also started work in their Phonetic Hebrew Decoding books.

4th Grade: Our fourth graders study Jewish values, and began by talking about some classroom norms and decorating the class tzedakah box.

5th Grade: Over the course of the year, our fifth graders will be following the milestones of the Jewish lifecycle. In anticipation of class next week, we ask that parents discuss their fifth graders's Hebrew names, and where their names come from (e.g., "You were named Adam after my grandfather"). This information will be useful for our unit on Baby Naming.

6th Grade: The sixth grade year tracks Jewish history from the Tanakh to the present day. Yesterday, they played a game to determine who in the Torah would be considered the "first" Jew and why.

TBS Teens: Join us on November 15th for an inter-shul basketball tournament at Temple Israel Center in White Plains. We want TBS to dominate! For more information and to RSVP, click here.

Seventh Grade

Today, September 28th, seventh grade meets from 5:45-7:15pm. This is a special family program that we ask you to prioritize attending.

If you haven't yet done so, please fill out this form letting us know the best time for scheduling B Mitzvah tutoring.

We're so excited to launch our new Religious School Family Handbook! In this document, you'll find information about our school's curriculum, policies, schedule, and - of course! - parking. You can view the document here, and we will keep the document updated as needed through the year at bit.ly/TBShandbook2627. You should also be able to find some printed documents in the lobby at TBS this week. I hope it will be useful to our new and returning families!

Celebrating Successes

Mazel Tov to Cyrus and Asher on your Bar Mitzvahs!

Happy birthday this week to Rose, Elle, Abigail, Will, Henry, David, and Emmett!

Beyond the Synagogue

How Does My Kid Learn Hebrew?

  • Students in grades K-2 learn Hebrew primarily with our Hebrew Through Movement Specialist.
  • Students in grades 3-6 learn Hebrew primarily using the Phonetic Hebrew Decoding workbooks. This spreadsheet will keep track of students’s progress, which parents can check on through the year. Parents: Watch your inbox for your student's unique Hebrew ID number, which will correspond to their Hebrew progress in the spreadsheet.

Since you made it to the bottom, here's something I think is cool:

BimBam has a lot of great educational videos, including some songs. I think their Sukkot song by Hadara Levin-Areddy, inspired by the book of Ecclesiastes, has a terrific hook:

Thank you all so much for participating in our Religious School!

Sincerely,

Harry
