The Brothers of St. Charles Lwanga will be at St. Mary's for the Summer Mission Co-Op Appeal this weekend.

The Brothers of St. Charles Lwanga are the first indigenous religious order in Africa, south of the Sahara.  Founded in 1927, the Brothers have been dedicated to offering support and education to children in marginalized communities.  They have transformed the lives of many children in East Africa by establishing primary schools, secondary schools, vocational training programs, and orphanages.  They are committed to the rehabilitation and development of children, especially orphans who are victims of AIDS, children living on the streets, as well as those families who suffer from severe poverty among other challenges.

Despite a long standing culture of self-reliance, the order is quickly realizing the growing social need of the many vulnerable groups in their communities.  There is growing poverty, illiteracy, and disease being experienced by families around them.  The Brothers have worked to respond and provide relief to these many needs.  Projects which are subsidized by the generosity of their benefactors include St. Patrick Primary School (Central Uganda) and St. Charles Lwanga Vocational School (Western Uganda).  These schools provide housing and education to orphans and low income families.  Some of their students live with HIV/AIDS, some come from child-headed families or are looked after by elderly grandparents.  The schools waive tuition for those who are unable to pay.

There are many challenges that the Brothers work to overcome with God's grace.  Water tanks are needed to harvest rain, providing the students safe drinking water while at school.  The Brothers appeal to the Church of St. Mary this summer is to concentrate on their efforts to provide water for those they serve.  Through our generosity in the Summer Mission Co-Op Appeal we can be instrumental in helping the Brothers provide clean water to their students!
