Hello Caldwell Baptists!
There are a lot of homecomings and revivals in our churches this time of the year, and I wish Martha Jo and I could attend all of them. What is homecoming really about? It is about followers of Christ being re-united in person and experiencing the joyful fellowship of brothers and sisters who are united in Christ and the ministry to which He has called us. It is also meant to be a time to reflect on the work of God in building His church in the past, present and future, and to celebrate the legacy of faithful servants of the church who are in their eternal home with the Lord.
What is revival really about? It is about the church reviving their zeal for Jesus Christ who is the head of the church. It is about renewing the church’s focus on the true work of the church which is making and developing disciples of Jesus. It is about stirring our hearts to be more devoted to the study of God’s word and to prayer as individuals and as the body of Christ. It is about presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ so that the lost might be saved and trained to be disciples.
Shouldn’t homecomings and revivals be about glorifying God by being the church that He called us to be? Shouldn’t we always be focused on His Great Commission to make and multiply disciples of Jesus Christ, and shouldn’t God’s word be our passion?
In Psalm 119 the psalmist talks about “Your testimonies” 19 times, and in verse 27 he says, “So shall I meditate on Your wonderful works.” As I studied this recently, I scanned through the Old Testament and read about God’s work in creation, His establishment of His people, Israel, and His mighty power in leading them out of slavery. I read about God’s plan to raise up a Savior, His own Son, so that mankind might be saved from their sins and have a personal relationship with Him forever. I read about God’s justice and righteous judgement on forces of evil, and His lovingkindness in guiding His children back to Him and His righteousness when they had strayed away in sin. The Bible is full of testimonies of God’s goodness, His faithfulness, and His wonderful works.
God’s Word - that is where revival truly begins, and where faithfulness is sustained. “The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”
Be Joyful!
Brother Chuck
