Nine crypto companies have formed the Quantum Alliance to prepare Bitcoin, Ethereum and other blockchain networks for future quantum-computing threats that could put an estimated 6.4 million bitcoin at risk, including roughly 1.1 million attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto. While no existing quantum computer can break today’s cryptography, alliance members disagree on how soon that could change, with one researcher pointing to 2028 and another saying no one knows the date. Ropes & Gray Analyzes SEC Crypto Asset Custody Proposal
Ropes & Gray examines the SEC’s October 1 proposal to allow investment advisers and regulated funds to self-custody crypto assets when no qualified custodian is available, subject to extensive safeguards. The framework would require quarterly written determinations that no qualified custodian will maintain the asset, along with asset-specific custody expertise, joint authorization for transfers, address-level segregation, cybersecurity controls, annual reviews, and independent internal control reports. It would also permit qualifying state trust companies to serve as crypto asset custodians and modernize requirements involving broker-dealers, discretionary trading authority, pooled vehicle audits, and recordkeeping. Advisers and funds could maintain required crypto records onchain if they can produce them for the SEC in a human-readable format. Comments are due December 7, 2026.
