Laura's Story, Part One:
“Love shouldn't hurt. I was broken and thought I was worthless."
Laura and her family were Montgomery County residents. On the surface, they seemed like any happy family. She had 2 daughters; was a stay-at-home parent, and her husband held a steady job to support the family.
However, behind closed doors, the family was far from perfect. Laura's husband was controlling and abusive. He had full control over her finances, daily schedule, and healthcare.
“We had insurance, but I wasn't always allowed to see the doctor. Even when the doctor gave me medication, he held onto it.”
One day his abuse went too far, and she decided to take her two young daughters and leave, but with no financial resources, their escape led to their experience of homelessness.
