Open Studios for San Luis Obispo County in California is over for another year. We had a great time again this year, seeing our artist friends, students and collectors! This BobBlast was filmed during one of my Open Studio demos.
My painting palette includes bright fluorescent tubes of color. Mixing fluorescents with regular colors creates an unexpected surprise color. I love painting this way! I decided to demo with these fun, bright colors.
Another word for Fluorescent is Luminous - my favorite hot pink color is called Luminous Opera by Holbein. Luminous paints historically have had a bad reputation for fading. Used by themselves, they tend to have no permanency, which means these bright, fluorescent colors may eventually fade, in time. Remember rock posters from the 60s? They are faded by now.
But wait… Here is some good new information! The experts at Holbein Artists Paints share good technical advice: When mixed in other acrylics, the luminous paints may not fade. When I mix Holbein Luminous Opera to Ultramarine Blue, the color turns into… Periwinkle! I also use pure luminous colors as the focal point, adding a spot of importance - just to kick it up a bit. I use luminous colors in everything!
Here is the commercial… Holbein conveniently has a set of six Heavy Body Acrylic Luminous Colors in Rose, Opera, Red, Orange, Yellow and Lemon. They are not subtle colors - that's one reason why I like to paint with them! These bright colors are not for the faint of heart, but instead challenge your strong, creative imagination. I use the luminous colors for original color mixes and for the fun of it!
We hosted a webinar about Holbein Luminous Acrylics, which included lively discussions between Bob and Matt Hopper of Holbein. Included in this webinar were demos on how to effectively use Luminous paint. Click here to view the webinar!
