One Week Left to Apply for 2022 Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation Youth Grants
|
|
"Why should there be hunger and deprivation in any land, in any city, at any table, when man has the resources and the scientific know-how to provide all mankind with the basic necessities of life? There is no deficit in human resources. The deficit is in human will." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
1 in 6 children in the United States live in households experiencing food insecurity. This is a problem that can be solved, and kids are an important part of the solution!
YSA (Youth Service America) and Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation are looking for the best ideas from young people about how they can provide immediate food aid to help end hunger today while also going beyond food aid to help ensure people are not hungry tomorrow.
Grants of up to $500 are supporting youth leaders ages 5-25 across the U.S. to turn their ideas into action and make an impact on the issue of childhood hunger. Since the application deadline is next Friday, January 21, MLK Day of Service is a perfect time to plan your project and work on your application.

Everyday Young Hero: Patrick Manuel
|
Patrick Manuel (24 | Mandaluyong City, Philippines) is on a mission to support the street vendors, especially those who are senior citizens, in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. While attending school, Patrick received a lot of support from his grandmother who owned and ran a small sari-sari store (similar to a convenience store). He saw his grandmother in the vendors whose shops were located near his university, and began to think about what might happen to them if they lost their livelihoods.
When the pandemic hit, Patrick launched Pantawid COVID Project to support these street vendors, many of whom had to shut down because of decreased foot traffic, imposed curfews, and stay-at-home orders. The Pantawid COVID Project is an online crowdfunding initiative that aims to provide aide or “Pantawid” to vulnerable families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. Through Partick’s efforts, more than 3,000,000 peso (roughly $60,000) worth of financial and in-kind donations were raised! These funds and items were able to support over 10,000 vulnerable families in his region, including street vendors, public transportation workers, minimum wage earners, and senior citizens.
While continuing to aid his community through philanthropic work, Patrick is looking toward long-term solutions to help elderly vendors and shop owner. In his research, Patrick learned that many of the small-scale business owners have the skills but lacked mentorship in terms of business regulatory requirements, government loan opportunities, and applicable courses. With the backing of local stakeholders ranging from businesses and government agencies to foundations and nonprofits, Patrick has crafted a coalition and is one step closer to providing sustainable and structural support.

"I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" - Nina Simone
|
"I wish I knew how it would feel to be free
I wish I could break all the chains holding me
I wish I could say
All the things that I should say
Say 'em loud say 'em clear
For the whole round world to hear
I wish I could share all the love that's in my heart
Remove all the bars that keep us apart
I wish you could know
what it means to be me
Then you'd see and agree
That every man should be free."
