Anniversary of the

Fairhope Industrial Association Locating Committee

Arrival in Daphne, Alabama

July 11, 1894

Did you know?

Fairhope was officially founded in November of 1894. Earlier that year, two individuals were tasked with traveling from Des Moines, Iowa, to a number of southern locations to report back to the group regarding a suitable location for the planned experimental community of Fairhope.

Without the event described below occurring July 11-13, 1894, Fairhope might have been located in Tennessee!

To inquire about an educational walking tour of the Fairhope Single Tax Cooperation Cemetery, Contact Let's Go! Fairhope 251-929-GOGO / LetsGoFairhope@gmail.com. Note: Tours require at least 48 hours advance as they must be approved by the Fairhope Single Tax Cemetery Committee and must not interfere with use of the cemetery by FSTC members.

Information below written by

Catherine King, Fairhope Volunteer of the Year 2024, in 2019:

July 11, 1894 - Mr. Shuah S. Mann and Professor James Bellangee, who together were the Fairhope Industrial Association Locating Committee, had been traveling since June 1st assessing sites for the new Single Tax Colony when they arrived in Mobile on July 11, 1894.

Taking the afternoon bay boat (presumably the James A. Carney, based on boat schedules later that year but not documented as such by this writer), they arrived in Daphne that evening. Mr. Edward Quincy Norton, the National Single Tax League representative for Baldwin County, and Mrs. Norton hosted the two men at their home for three days. Norton showed Mann and Bellangee the "resources and advantages" (Fairhope Courier 8/15/1894) of the area; the committeemen then reported favorably and eloquently on this site.

By early August 1894, the Locating Committee had returned to home base in Des Moines, Iowa, traveling approximately 3,000 miles to potential sites in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. A members' vote was taken to choose the location of Fairhope, and was reported in the October 1, 1894 edition of the Fairhope Courier to be overwhelmingly cast for Baldwin County on the eastern shore of the Mobile Bay.
